Hanged air traffic controller sought asylum for fear of religious persecution

Hanged air traffic controller sought asylum for fear of religious persecution thumbnail

Ismail Mohamed Didi, the 25 year-old air traffic controller who was found hanged from the control tower of Male International Airport at 4:00am on Tuesday morning in an apparent suicide, was seeking asylum in the UK for fear of persecution over his lack of religious belief.

Islamic website Raajjeislam reported yesterday that Ismail “was a person inclined to atheism” and had “declared his atheism to his friends.”

The website alleged that Ismail had refused to follow religious sermons.

“This is an issue that a Muslim government should consider,” the website said. “Because when these types of people die, they are buried in the same [cemetery] where Muslims are buried. Their funeral prayers and body washing are also conducted as for Muslims. It is questionable as to whether this is allowed according to Islam.”

Over two emails sent to an international humanitarian organisation on June 23 and 25, obtained by Minivan News, Ismail admits he is an atheist and desperately requests assistance for his asylum application, after claiming to have received several anonymous threats on June  22.

In the emails, he says he “foolishly admitted my stance on religion” to work colleagues, word of which had “spread like wildfire.”

“A lot of my close friends and girlfriend have been prohibited from seeing me by their parents. I have even received a couple of anonymous phone calls threatening violence if I do not repent and start practising Islam,” he said.

“Maldivians are proud of their religious homogeneity and I am learning the hard way that there is no place for non-Muslim Maldivians in this society.”

Ismail claimed he had been “trying for some time to seek employment abroad, but have not yet succeeded. I would already have left the country if I was sure I could meet the required burden of proof in an asylum claim.”

“I cannot bring myself to pretend to be I am something I am not, as I am a staunch believer in human rights. I am afraid for my life here and know no one inside the country who can help me.”

Subject: a plea for help

Dear sir,

I’m a 25 year-old Maldivian living in Male’. I have been working as an Air Traffic Controller at Male’ International Airport for almost 7 years now.

I started becoming disenchanted with Islam around 5 years ago and am now an atheist. During my transformation, and even now, I am quite the idealist, and when i was confronted about two years back by a couple of my colleagues about my aversion from the daily practices of Islam, i somewhat foolishly admitted my stance on religion.

I had asked them to keep it a secret from the rest of our workforce at ATC, although i now realize i should have known better. It did not take long for everybody at work to find out and since then, i have faced constant harassment in my work environment.

An atheist is not a common feature at all among Maldivians and the word has spread like wildfire since then. It has now come to the point where everyone I know, including my family, have become aware of my lack of belief.

In a society that has always been proud of their religious homogeneity, you can imagine what i am being put through. I have been subjected to numerous consultations with religious scholars and even my closest friends are not allowed to see me.

My company has already begun investigating a complaint regarding me, collecting testimony from fellow workers about my apostasy.

Just 3 days ago, i received two anonymous phone calls threatening violence if i do not start openly practicing Islam.

I am at my wit’s end now. I have been trying for sometime to secure employment abroad, but have not yet succeeded.

The only other alternative i can think of is to flee the country to seek asylum elsewhere. I have already written an e-mail to your organization, and am anxiously waiting for a reply. I found your e-mail address on facebook. I am in dire need of assistance and know of no one inside the country who can guide me.

I would have already left the country if i was sure i could meet the required burden of proof in an asylum claim. I would like to know if you would be able to help me in anyway should i travel to the U.K to seek asylum and what my chances are of making a successful claim.

Thank you for your consideration
Ismail Mohamed Didi

Mohamed Ibrahim, Managing Director of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), confirmed that Ismail was  the subject of an internal investigation last month regarding his professed apostasy.

“I believe his family were also concerned, and tried to give him counselling through religious leaders,” Ibrahim said.

“Management decided it was outside our mandate and referred the matter to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs – we haven’t got a reply. Professionally we took no action – he was a good worker.”

A colleague of Ismail’s told Minivan News on condition of anonymity that his colleagues had learned he was an atheist “more than a year ago”, and while they did not care whether or not he believed in God, “some became irritated at the way he openly insulted God.”

“A complaint was made to the airport company’s human resources department. Based on their report – I saw a copy of the final version a month ago – they found that although he was an atheist, he was not propagating his belief in the workplace and so no action would be taken.”

The source insisted that Ismail was never mistreated by his colleagues about his religious position, “although they were sometimes irritated by the way he addressed God. He was treated as a normal controller and suffered no discrimination,” the source said, explaining that the air traffic controllers were a close-knit bunch who “lived and played together. Everybody was crying and misses him.”

Ismail was part of a large family from the island of Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, the source explained.

“The family is very humble and religious. His mother tried sending him to religious classes and a couple of months back he said he went to see Sheikh Illyas, but just argued with him about religion and stormed out. That’s what he said – I don’t know what was said in person. But it is possible his friends may have distanced themselves.”

Minivan News was unable to confirm whether Ismail visited Sheikh Illyas prior to his death, as the Sheikh was not responding to calls. However Islamic Minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari said he was aware that Ismail’s parents had sought religious counselling for their son “because of some problems he was facing in his religious beliefs.”

“They asked for counselling but I think they met a scholar while they were in our office. I was not at the Ministry – this was during the period of [Cabinet's] resignation. I heard he was not a ministry scholar – I don’t think it was Sheikh Illyas this time. I think he saw [Sheikh Hassan] Moosa Fikry,” Dr Bari said.

Sheikh Fikry, who is the Vice-President of religious NGO Jamiyyathul Salaf, was not responding to calls at time of press. Salaf’s President, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Mohamed Ibrahim, also could not be contacted.

Last moments

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam said Ismail’s body showed no sign of physical injuries.

“Police have taken samples for forensic investigation, we are seeking more information about him to try and determine how this happened,” Shiyam said.

Ismail’s colleague said the 25-year-old had returned from leave shortly before the day he died.

“It seemed like he came to work fully prepared to die,” he said. “Ismail normally took the 6:00am-8:00am shift, but on this day he requested the supervisor give him the 3:00am-5:00am shift.”

“During this time there are no air traffic movements and the tower can be staffed by one person, before operations begin at 5:30am. It seems he wanted the quiet time alone,” he said.

“His mother said she called him in the morning at 5:30am to tell him to pray, but there was no answer. They found his cigarette lighter on the balcony.”

    Internal investigation? WTF?

Mohamed Ibrahim! Is investigating about people’s own personal beliefs part of your job description?

Are you trying to prove your religiosity by initiating that?

Does your investigation finish when someone says either he is an Islamic believer or an apostate?

Kihaa bodu balaaeh miothee jehifa mi dhefuh keheri thakaa hure?

  2. fe_rk on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 7:12 PM

Im glad its not a muslim who died this way. Surely all who dies by suicide has no fear of God choosing the short cut to Hell.
May Maldives always be a muslim country and hopefully an islamic country in future.

  3. Natasha on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 7:20 PM

What utter sadness. As a muslim i am ashamed that this has happened in our country. He had as much right to live in peace in this country as anyone else, no matter what his belief.
How bad things must have got for him to feel that the only way out was this. Such a tragedy that these international organizations that he wrote to didn’t reply.
Maldives has come to such a state, that any maldivian who writes to international organizations should be taken seriously.
Its a sad day for Maldives, that a person had to take his own life for being persecuted for his religious beliefs.
I hope this serves as a lesson to all those who has freinds and family members who are struggling with their faith. You love and accept a person no matter what his belief, and Islam does not encourage otherwise.

  4. Amy on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 7:21 PM

Why did Mohamed Ibrahim have to refer the case to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs? Why did a rep from Jamiyyathul Salaf have to be in this when the case was referred to the Ministry? Is salf an activist arm of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs? I am not trying to justify someones suicide, but, this has to be investigated carefully. People need to know if it is safe to talk openly about religion. Was he intimidated and forced to commit suicide by the Mullahs? Was he emotionally distressed because of the pressure from colleagues, mullahs and the family? Who is reponsible for pushing someone to the point of suicide? This is serious – because this proves people are scared to express their views on religion.

He had Hunger for freedom. And when he could not be free from the agonizing conflict which tore him apart between A.) a life of hypocrisy and falseness forced upon him by fear of rejection (which degrades ones dignity) OR

B.) alienation – a victim of loneliness, hostility and the depression which results from perpetual hatred and rejection by ones own loved ones…

he chose to end the pain of this conflict which he thought would never end…

Damn you England and the West for failing to accept this soul quickly, you merciless …

and damn you Fundamentalist Sheik’s and narrow minded Muslims for depriving people of the right to reject Islam if they do not really feel it, your social narrowness has killed this boy…

please, one of you politicians has to try and fight for a more humane way to deal with the reality of non-Maldivian Muslims!

They treated him very well and he even cooperated with them. But then, rumours wil spread and blame islam for this. Its nothing we can prevent, coz some ppl’s ignorance runs too deep.

This must be a depression case, he might have been pissed of life in Maldives and obviously tried to leave the country as an asylum seeker. Poor guy, for him life in Maldives was same as living in hell. Being atheist he would have chosen to die rather than living in hell.

this is sad, very very sad only…

one could not help but wonder, aren’t we careless. Its very difficult for us to put ourselves in someone else’s place.. just imagine the struggle he had to go through to reach a point to take his life.. although how stupid i think it is “to kill yourself” i totally understand why someone could or would do such a thing, especially in this current Maldives…

most people probably would be in a weired way glad to find about this, because he does not subscribe to the same theory as everyone else..such is the status of this little country in the 21st century

MINIVAN NEWS really seems to have something against Islam. The beautiful religion of Islam ..it is soo beautiful.. everything is soo clear . For those people around here who don’t support the religion i call them to leave this county and practice your religion somewhere else. Take drugs,, drink as much as you like.. walk naked on the roads…. talk shit to your parents.. just leave us Muslims at peace in this country. leave and live with the Pope..May Allah pardon all our sins.

  18. yaamyn on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 9:10 PM

    This is sad.

As religious extremism and intolerance spreads in this country – with government sanction and funds, no less – innocents will continue to be harassed and pushed to the brink in this manner.

“Mohamed Ibrahim, Managing Director of the Maldives Airports Company Limited”
is as culpable in this homicide (that’s what I believe it is) as the fundamentalist overrun Ministry that has been brought to ‘counsel’ him.

I’d further condemn his family and ‘friends’ for their actions. Bullying a person to the point of suicide is NOT the best way to advertise your religion.

  19. Azra on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 9:31 PM

    Dear readers,

I want to say that I am deaply moved and saddened by this persons action.

No matter what their beliefs are every single one of us should be free to express their own views on religion without intimidation or harrassment. I hope this young man’s action would make you all think about Human Rights from a different perspective.

My thoughts and feelings are with the family of this young person and I hope they will look at this in a positive way and think of him as a martyr who died as a representation of the lack of freedom of expression which exists in the Maldives.

  20. Ahmed Anony on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 9:35 PM

    Ally, Ally, Ally.
    Tsk tsk tsk.

No one is blaming islam here. It’s just those comments from those so-called muslims practically gloating over his death that have convinced me that some intolerant, self-centered bunch of wannabe muslims have threatened and bullied him to the point of suicide.

  21. Muad MZ on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 10:03 PM

I do feel sorry for the ones that are born Muslim but yet does not find their way into Islam. Instead even after people encourage them to read more about the Prophet (pbuh) and Islam, they take it lightly and take the fact that they are born into Islam as a burden instead of a gift or a chance.

When Abu Talib was about to die and did not declare his belief in Allah (swt). The the Prophet ( pbuh ) said, ‘ I will keep on asking ( Allah for ) forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so. ‘ Then it was revealed:

It is not fitting for the Prophet and those who believe that they should pray for forgiveness for pagans even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the companions of the fire. [ 9 : 113 ]

There is another verse which applies for some who has no faith in Allah (swt).

“And surely, We have created many of the jinn and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, and they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones”
    [al-A’raaf 7:179].

    http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/113901

Parents should really try their very best to guide their children from young. Most important of ages is when they start to understand what is being told to them. When the heart is strong in faith from young, it is hard to break it. But many parents are very lose with their kids, thinking that they will try to teach them when they are mature enough in western understanding.

  22. haamudhuru on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 10:05 PM

This tragedy could have been prevented had our people learnt to respect and be tolerant to other people’s beliefs and views.

Because of the superstitions of Mullah’s with their fairy tales, the Maldivians have lost faith in Islam. unfortunately we will continue to see more of this kind of events taking place unless extremist Mullah are arrested or stopped
from speaking obscenities in the open/

  24. heck on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 10:17 PM

I don’t know what to say!

I HAVE noted the real problem here. He was an atheist. That, according to my calculation IS not the problem. I think MALIGNING Islam and inventing lies concerning ALLAH was the real mistake he should NOT have committed.

ATHEISTS MUST LEARN TO RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE’S FAITH, AND TRY NOT TRADUCE OR DISPARAGE OTHER COLLEAGUES’ FAITH. PEOPLE CAN GET REALLY HURT WHEN ALLAH IS REBUKED IN AN OVERWHELMINGLY MUSLIM NATION.

Religion is a private matter! If only this young man kept it private!

I honestly see no foul play here. BUT he must have painfully got ISOLATED AND DEPRESSED. Depression is a really bad thing and very much so for a GODLESS person.

If you truly believe in Allah and turn to Him during your difficult times, you CAN spend your life even on pile of garbage, HAPPILY !

Without FAITH, atheists easily turn to SUICIDE.

Notice how covertly he changed his duty to midnight !

    AL-HAQQA (THE TRUTH) 69:44
“Had he invented lies concerning Us, We would have seized him by the right hand and cut off his heart’s vein; not one of you could have protected him”

Now, I wonder if this young man tied the NOOSE around his neck with his right hand!!

I only wish he had picked up the phone to his mother and heeded her advice to PRAY!

    Al-QIYAMA (THE RESURRECTION) 75:33-34
“In this life, he neither believed nor prayed; he denied the truth and turned away; and he went to his kinsfolk elated with pride. Well have you deserved this doom; well have you deserved it”

  25. Non Maldivian on Wed, 14th Jul 2010 10:24 PM

I am sure my attitude will be critisized as it’s a very simple one… but as a non Maldivian living in this country I feel saddened by the tragic death of someone just 25 years old. I feel even more saddened that someone can say they are glad this did not happen to a Muslim.
He was Ismail, a person, a part of peoples lives that they now have to pick the pieces up and try and make sense of his death.

Religion aside I offer condolences to the people close to Ismail that have lost their friend, their brother, their son, their boyfriend or their co-worker.

I hope that this maldivians life was not taken in vain and as a country we can show the respect to his family and loved ones that they deserve at this tragic time.

I wouldn’t agree this was murder but would call it assisted suicide. I really hope that anyone who ridiculed him or bullied him in any way experiences the despair he must have felt in his last minutes even just for one minute to understand the power of words.

Is religion worth the life of a person. Religion is just a label you inherit at birth through your parents.
When you come to an age what is what, and what is best for you, you have the right to change it or ignore it as per your liking. you should not force delicate areas of politics, religion, nationality cast etc. It has to be picket up entirely upto a person’s taste. If forced, this is an example result. v. sad indeed.

“ATHEISTS MUST LEARN TO RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE’S FAITH”

In any other country, I would have agreed with this statement.

The Maldivian state and most of its citizens, sadly, have no understanding of the concept of human rights or treating others with dignity.

Another (former?) atheist, who declared his lack of faith in a public forum during a lecture by self-proclaimed scholar Naik, found himself being physically attacked by so-called pious Muslims.

They stayed up all night gathered around the police station demanding his murder.

Similarly, the case with Hilath Rasheed the outspoken anti-extremist blogger.

The man was harassed, bullied and threatened with his life almost on a daily basis just for having views not compatible with freedom-hating mullahs.

These so-called true ‘Muslims’ of the Salafi/wahhabi strains must understand that respect is earned, not forcefully demanded by thuggery and abuse of law.

Treat others with dignity, if you want to be treated the same. Cowering behind excuses and pretensions of being ‘victimized’ aren’t going to help you.

Any person with half a functioning neuron in this country knows very well that religious minorities (whether Maldivian or foreigners) are severely oppressed in the Maldives.

It is unbecoming of an Islamic country, and it is unbecoming of a civilized people (I use the term very loosely here)

It would be nice if the Maldives were headed towards a more liberal, secularized society.

Instead, the country is being systematically brainwashed, indoctrinated and on the verge of becoming a salafi theocracy – the stark reminders of which are some of the pathetic comments in this thread that seem to celebrate this tragic death as some kind of victory for Islam.

Billgates (founder of microsoft), sir Bob geldof( lead organizer of live aid to help hunger in africa), Sigmund Freud (father of modern psychology) Linus Torvalds ( original creator of the kernel Linux) ,Alan Turing ( English mathematician, pioneering computer scientist, and code breaker) and even the a lot of respect ancient (so called muslim) scientists are all atheists. more?? Warren Buffett, Charles Darwin,Mark Twain,Bruce Lee,Salman rushdee,

My point is this is not about athiesm. This is about tolerance and respect for what ever belief a person holds. If the person is not harmful then why do you bother?.

what sick thought is that when these people have such good to the humanity and to believe that they will burn in hell.

This country has nothing to offer honest, tolerant, peace loving human beings any more. Human Rights is nothing but a buzz word here.

This country is also gripped by the fear of religion, not love for it. There is no peace here, because of this religious zealotry, intolerance and ignorance. It is one of the most destructive forces here today, along with addictive illegal drugs and corruption.

The family of this lost young man should give him the decent burial he deserves, as an extremely honest human being who did not want to pretend to be what he was not. His conscience did now allow him to pretend. It takes some guts to be so principled. The Maldives is a hostile environment to honest people, because this is the cost of honesty. There are too many amongst us for whom pretense is the norm. This young man should be commended for his honesty and integrity – qualities which are indeed rare in this country.

No-one has a right to threaten violence against another person. The people who threatened violence and intimidated this lonely young man must reflect on their part in the events leading to his death. And so should those who harassed and marginalised him, which ultimately lead to this tragedy.

Is bullying and hounding others what Muslims do in this country today, to be faithful to their religion?
Is that supposed to score points with the Almighty?
Many would argue that these are the very people who have abandoned Islam.

  37. Ahmed on Thu, 15th Jul 2010 12:54 AM

The only problem with the extremist Muslims are that they want to play the role of god. We as Muslims we believe in the judgment day. It is up to god to judge people. We as Muslims we don’t have to judge people. Dear Muslims, why is there a judgment day? A person can do or believe in what ever he wants in this world. Laws and regulations, NOT religion will decide if he will be punished in THIS world.

Haha! This is not assisted suicide, THIS is outright murder! He was murdered by every single idiot out there who made his life a living disaster just because he said he was an atheist. This goes up to the manager who was “running an investigation.” Investigation? On what? Religion? In an international airport, this guy is running an investigation….on a person who claimed to be an atheist. I am very disappointed with his two friends who broke this news to others. Why couldn’t anybody see him? He would be no different from the day before he proclaimed to be an atheist. This is outright bullshit. I am a Maldivian muslim, and I am proud to say so. However, I don’t think the the way our religious identity is changing is too good, since it is more becoming something like what we see in Afghanistan. Soon enough, I think we will start seeing people get stoned to death because of adultery. Sheesh! I am sick, and tired of the discrimination, lack of respect and intolerance of some Maldivians. And I blame all the adhaalathian mullahs for spreading the extremist and violent wahhabism ideology in maldives in the name of Islam. No, it is not Islam, it is a SECT of Islam followed by a godamned minority!

Maldives is a breeding ground for athesist and secularist who are becoming increasingly militant! At this rate they (these Athesists and Secularists) would terrorize the Maldivians in next 3 years!! Believe me Satanism and secularism is on the rise! People who are openly commiting prostitution, gay acts, killing innocent people in broad day light in on the rise in Maldives! And music groups sponsored by elite Gay and Secularist community in different spectrum of Maldivian society is demanding lawlessness! This is also aided by the corrupt Arab or middle eastern kingdoms and Western powers in the name of democracy!!

This is how Allah brings to an end to the unfortunate. Allah has blessed him with knowledge and has given him several opportunities to rectify himslef and unforunately he igonored the blessings and look at who he was beggging in his letter to give protection. But he failed to realize Allah gives protection to whom he please and certainly his pleas and hopes were not accepted by Allah instead a very sad end to him. All maldivians sshould learn a lession from this and look beyond the unseen.

Don’t blame our Deen. He is not the first person to commit suicide. And sadly it was his choice for which you can’t held our Deen responsible.

Our Deen is the Deen of peace and truth. And you can’t blame it for some story that say he did out of some pressures from some people.

The case has to be investigated.

You talk about respecting different views and then at the same time intolerant for the fact we are a majority who are believers of GOD.Kindly please learn to live like a “minority” or even a “majority”. It doesn’t matter now who are the majority or minority. Both parties has to respect each other. You can’t blackmail the criticism from us when we are up to defend our belief. We have the right to propagate what we believe as well.

This is hypocrisy. You believe you have all the right to malign Islam and it’s core principles without even knowing the true and pure teachings of it in the name of tolerance, freedom and secularism. Some are trying the same,as posted in this thread by comparing it with few peoples act.

And for those who are posting comments of contentment on this tragic event should know that Islam does not allow such acts. I kindly advice ourself to read Quran with understanding and the Authentic Hadhiths. Please don’t follow the way of Satan and his supporters.

I feel sad for Ismail. He is a brother of us in humanity and a even more closer as a countryman. My sincere condolences to his family, relatives and friends.

The recent events have shown it. It has always been like it. Maldivian’s cannot tolerate any other religion. And the sad reality is that, that is part encouraged by the government. For what? To control and have the population obey by sheer fear.
Honestly, deep inside, I feel that all-mighty would not care what bloody shit we make ourselves here on earth. If anything, he would want humans to live
in peace, and humanity to thrive.

If anything, a human finger, let alone a complete human and life, holds more ‘miracle’ than any shit preached by anybody. Under no circumstance should a life be punished unless he is a threat to the society and has committed a crime against humanity. This does not include any man-made bullshit crap of divinity.

    Look at facts.
    1) There are as much deaths, sufferings in a muslim-country as any other, as far as natural events happen. If god wanted so, muslims would see heaven on earth.
    2) You have problems narrating,in writings on what is happening in Male’ past week. How in hell do you think what happened 1500 years ago, be flawlessly written down.
    3) If all powerful ‘God’ wanted anything, it will be so. No human need to take a sword to enforce his will. If he wished, no human would even have the capacity to think religion. Since we do, it means, think what we want. And in the interest of humanity, lay our rules and live in peace. Muslim or otherwise.

My opinion. Religion / (muslim) is a way to fuel male ego / hunger / power.
    a) Reckless use of power.
    b) Men can get sex and abuse women.
    c) control all by sheer fear.
    d) dont give any the free will to think, which could create conflicts with those in power.

  63. saddened on Thu, 15th Jul 2010 9:28 AM

This country seem to have nothing to offer honest, tolerant, peace loving human beings any more. Human Rights is just a buzz word here.

This country is also gripped by the fear of religion, not love or respect for it.

The Maldives has become a hostile environment to honest people, because this is the cost of honesty. There are too many amongst us for whom pretense is the norm. This young man should be commended for his honesty and integrity – qualities which are indeed rare in this country.

No-one has the right to threaten violence against another person. The people who threatened violence and intimidated this lonely and desperate young man must reflect on their role in the events leading to his death. And so should those who harassed and marginalised him, which ultimately lead to this tragedy.

Is bullying and hounding others what Muslims do in this country today, to be faithful to their religion?
Is that supposed to score points with the Almighty? This is surely the height of ignorance.

Many would argue that these are the very people who have abandoned Islam.

You’re not a victim in this country (nor is there a concept of a ‘majority’ in a state that professes to be 100% Sunni/Salafi Muslim by writ of constitution)

My simple, factual statement that religious minorities – whether foreigners or Maldivian – are severely discriminated against by the Maldivian state has been made to sound like some kind of attack on your religion.

I appreciate the fact that you added a sentence for the benefit of your jehadi cousins here, but I do not appreciate my comments being misread on purpose.

  71. Bettina on Thu, 15th Jul 2010 11:09 AM

I will also add to all this noise. A few thoughts on the concept of religion.

    1) Just like a child cannot be born a republican or a democrat, a child cannot be born a Christian, Muslim or a Hindu for that matter. To adhere to, or not to, a particular faith is a decision that a conscious mind, with the ability of thinking of abstract thought, has to make.

2)The promise of another life devalues the current life. For believers this life is just a transit point, before moving onto their actual life.

Religion prescribes believers to do certain things, often calling for violence, so that they will be rewarded in the afterlife. A perfect example is the call for jihad and the concept of martyrdom. Believers are promised abundant rewards, 72 virgins been a very popular one, encouraging believers to kill and be killed in the name of religion.

I’m just amazed at the environment we are put in by ALLAH, its filthy but we all are so tempted to get into every mess. We hardly think of ourselves. Always pointing out faults of others; government, media, scholars.

As for the information I received on Ismail Mohamed Didi, he was the top student in his classes but he always had a tendency to speak against god/religion. some people try to get answers by debating, others by researching. Just a final comment.

A lot of commentators appear to think of ‘democracy’ as a system where the “majority” is free to tyrannize the minority.

That, in itself, is a tragedy.

Democracy and rule of law mean nothing if it cannot protect and safeguard the weakest of the society.

In an actual democracy, there would be NGOs and civilians and legal authorities and governments stepping in at this juncture to take up this issue – and to make sure no more Dhivehin have to undergo the trauma that this young man did.

It is the responsibility of society to PREVENT this.

But here, in this theocracy posing as a delusional, make-believe democracy for the benefit of someone, there is still no one to speak up for the man.

Hate comments, horrifying justification, pointless utterances from the ‘Ministry’ (who, I believe, are very directly culpable in this) and ridicule being heaped upon the dead man in the fundamentalist blogs is all that is expected, and visible.

This country doesn’t have a democracy, much less does it deserve one.

It’s at moments like this that I have the unfortunate wish that other countries and our neighbors treat Maldivians just like we treat them. Like dirt.

  79. Firza on Thu, 15th Jul 2010 11:29 AM

    @Bettina

The 72 virgin thing is not the reason they are tempted to go kill themselves. Its injustice done to them.

Spiritually, its not the 72 virgins that encourage people, who faced injustice, to do jihad, but the promised paradise without counting the deeds cause for everyone who’s deeds are counted would be seeing the hell. The 72 virgins is just a propaganda spread by the media.

For those who don’t believe in Islam and existence of God.. Just think of how your body came into existence and how it functions. Just think of the laws of Nature, how orderly the Earth is sustained. Think of your own consciousness.
God laid rules and regulations for the safety and wellbeing of humans as a whole. We humans are so sensitive to changes, we get hurt too easily and carried away by worldly benefits with the expanse of other humans beings. We humans are so emotional and get easily influenced on earthy interests hence making us harm others by committing outrages acts of evil. So as a society as a whole what is the best thing to do to have peace and harmony? In America some people who commit sins like murder and child rape are put to death. In many countries people who deal with drugs are put to death. Many families get corrupted because of married man committing adultery with other woman, small children having sex at early age,,, the human society is so entangled with and emotionally fragile that there need to be a law to protect the society as a whole.
Look at what AIDS is doing to our World. Look at the environmental impact. Look at the net … naked pictures of man and woman .In some countries adult movies are allowed freely. All these is so painful to human minds that they get influenced and commits outrages acts of evil which later in time gets normalized to be regarded as acts of evil in the society. This normalization is a very dangerous thing.
So out of all these .. which religion gives the best solution with the rules and regulations. Read whatever the books you have …if you don’t believe in religion dhen leave it.
As for me Islam is the only religion which looks at and give solutions to the human society as a whole . That’s my opinion.

    > For those who don’t believe in Islam and existence of God.. Just think of how your body came into existence and how it functions. Just think of the laws of Nature, how orderly the Earth is sustained. Think of your own consciousness.

Your explanations are so simple that even a 3 year old child can understand them.

However, they are also wrong. We know quite a bit about natural phenomena than we did 1400 years ago. Scientific explanations for these are not simple to understand – it takes years of study and a certain amount of intelligence to get a good grasp of them.

But scientific explanations WORK and modern civilization is proof of this. There are things we do not know yet (consciousness, origin of life, etc.), but we will know answers to these in a few hundred years.

    Cedric,

Your stream of abuse does not constitute an argument.

I do not claim any right to “insult” your beliefs. But here again, you choose to play the victim card, which is what I cannot digest.

You’re living in a country that is 100% Sunni Muslim by the writ of constitution, a country where religious minorities have ZERO rights, where hard working foreigners who form an important backbone of our country’s economy (teachers, laborers, administrators, waiters) cannot practice their faith openly.

You claim to feel victimized by THEM? We Maldivians treat our fellow south asians – of the same race, color and ancestry – worse than Israelis treat Arabs. (Hey, Arabs are recognized in Israel – and participate in their Knesset, at the very least. Unimaginable in the Maldives)

Have you bothered to count the number of posts here telling secular Muslim Maldivians to leave this country? You’re not the only one.

Also, the “only” harm caused to Hilath was by himself?

Are you sure? Having known him a bit, I can state with absolute authority that few humans can bear the kind of intense pressures that Hilath did.

Least of all the moral cowards who chose to issue death threats and post rumors about him behind the cover of anonymity.

Hilath had to abandon living in the capital, Nazim will now live forever in the danger of getting lynched by a jihadi mob on the streets, and now another man has committed suicide.

As an outspoken advocate for secularism on my former blog, I have received innumerable death threats – from anonymous cowards.

You still think it is YOU who is being oppressed?

As to answer the hordes of comments here seeking to know why we liberals/secularists do not go to live in the Vatican.

The answer is that we’re Dhivehin – true flesh and blood Maldivians.

Our parents, greatparents and their parents and great grand parents were Dhivehin born in these very islands. We are greater patriots for not abandoning our liberal cultural values in favor of Arab/Afghan cultural practices.

You’re in no position to request us to leave, any more than we are to order you to move back to the backward, theocratic kingdom of Saudi Arabia where you truly belong.

    @Bodu Kashi li Buruma

Yes how about an exchange. Britain can take none Muslims and the Maldives can take Muslims living in Britain.

There they can be free to practice their beautiful religion of peace, which generally means killing daughter because they happen to love someone the family doesn’t approve of, suicide bombing of innocent people on trains and planes, making women dress up as letter boxes etc etc.

  101. Baazu on Thu, 15th Jul 2010 3:48 PM

@ Heck. The verse u quoted fro QURAN (69:44) cannot be applied to any body else other than Prophet Mohamed, and the verse and the subsequent verses which followed says if Prophet Mohamed utter any religious ruling other than what is revealed to him by GOD, he will be punished.

    069.044
“And if he had invented false sayings concerning Us,”
    069.045
“We assuredly had taken him by the right hand”
    069.046
” And then severed his life-artery,”
    069.047
“And not one of you could have held Us off from him.”

And what most of us…including the “Mullas” of Maldives don’t understand is the freedom of religion!

(Quran 2:256) “. Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. ”

The question is, why there should not be a place for people who believe in other religions in Maldives. It should be his choice to choose.

We have to change the way we think!

Firstly, my sincere condolences to all those close to Ismail. Suicide leaves a terrible legacy with those near the deceased asking themselves if they could have done more to avert such a final act.

I find reading the posts above deeply disturbing. I have been to the Maldives socially and on business. I know a number of Maldivians from all strata of the community. Out of all of them, I would only regard one as a devout Muslim. The majority only pay lip service to the religion to avoid what Ismail has gone through. When abroad (or on a resort island), many are happy to drink alcohol. In any event, the country is happy to accept huge amounts of money from the tourist industry which relies heavily either directly or indirectly on alcohol sales. A surprising proportion of people I speak to are happy to admit that they are not religious, but would never dare do so in public for obvious reasons.

Those of you who feel this way know exactly what I’m talking about. I just want you to know that you are not alone; you may well be in the majority. Like me, you must wonder how much longer this hypocrisy can be allowed to continue. It is just not honest to carry on as if you are a devout Muslim state while having one of the biggest heroin problems in the world, while making money out of selling a drug (alcohol) of which you apparently disapprove, while boasting one of the highest divorce rates in the world, while paying only lip service to a religion which makes such stringent demands on your inner and outer life (the list goes on and on).

If you could all show the kind of courage shown by Ismail, you would stand up and be counted, and in so doing show the rest of the nation that there are enough of you to make a nonsense of the idea of a 100% Muslim state. Then everybody could live in a tolerant society, consistent with the best values of Islam, or any decent religion, for that matter.

ME: I’m not pretending to be anything I am not. But you are, my friend
Y Says:”You’re not a victim in this country (nor is there a concept of a ‘majority’ in a state that professes to be 100% Sunni/Salafi Muslim by writ of constitution)”
ME: Who says that? You? I don’t have any reason to believe you or your way of reply with anger out of hatred. But thanks for this reply that proves my point.

ME: See how the cat comes out of the bag, “My Religion”? No it’s not “My Religion”. In fact it is “My Deen”. Do you and others who hate us get it? I don’t think so, because you seems to be out out your mind and out of touch with the reality. Sorry to say that, but there’s no better way to counter an invalid & illogical argument while you are giving yourself the answer to our claims. You and your like are maligning us and then blackmailing with our “Deen’s principles” OUT OF CONTEXT. I wish you could understand this statement. But will not, because your kind is heedless. Biased, self centered & bigotry is the perfect description.

ME: Then you should stop posting comments on such open forums. Are you requesting or demanding that you let be given a free ride with your bigotry while you are maligning our “Deen” without even knowing it. Come on! Be practical.

And for those who are using this tread to post all sorts of nonsense comments:

We are believers of Allah, only bowing down to him in submission and to him alone. We don’t want to force our belief to anyone but will not hesitate to say what is “wrong” as wrong. Those who hate us or dislike us may rage in anger and disgust but we have nothing to do with them and their belief. Allah is sufficient for us as our protector.

Condolences to Ismail’s family and may he rest in peace.
Ismail was not a bad person, Ismail was born a muslim, Ismail, (holding a very risky position), served the government/people genuinely, Ismail was a Maldivian, died a Maldivian and would be remembered to those who really new him. I knew him, I know his immediate family very well.
Suicide is no surprise to me and I foresee many cases to come. Our family grieved a few years ago, as we too lost a loved young teenage boy on ropes. He didn’t have the opportunity to send a mail, but left behind on a wall, reasons for his suicide well written with his own blood. What he wrote was the truth, facts about why teenagers have opted for the rope rather than life, religion or education.
The Family is the first to blame, and for us we accepted it as we neglected him. The fact that a child abuses drugs doesn’t justify him to be termed a bad person, we did. The disconnection within families for whatever reasons has been and will always be a cause for friction, stress and emptiness. Parents, unfortunately most are conservative and less learned, tend to ‘closeup’ their children, impose harsh discipline rules and enforce religion in many aspects. Wrong.
The system is next to blame. How many people aged 40yrs and above reached ‘A’ levels or did any professional skilled studies? a handful, WHY, the system at that time did not encourage education, did not prepare the youth to face developing world, rather it kept people in belief that religion was the ultimate savior. No schools, no medical care, no social activities in almost all islands (except atoll capital islands) Look at ourselves today, the shameful embarrassing fights at parliament, mockery, personal attacks and so on. Lack of Education, and greediness are the causes!
Ironically, each island even today, has a multi million well built mosques which we appreciate, but god never said we have marble mosques and coral made schools!!! Ismail, our dear boy and many who have given up lives are examples of what is happening in the society. We Maldivians live in secrecy, in denial and biggest pretenders in many cases. There are problems in our houses, our society and ourselves and we pretend as if nothing is wrong. 3 out of 5 parents with teenage kids are having a rough time NOW, but we pretend all is fine, runnisng around with 5kg backs full of books and spend for the IT, phones, etc. These issues must be discussed or we would see more hangings and diversion from religion. Today’s children are educated to know that having sex with a nine year girl is child abuse, they know covering the face of a woman is stupidity, and they know that, you must get educated to earn or we end up like Haiti, Somalia and Ethopia. Do you think they will go and sit for hours reciting koran? but yes, they can spend an hour with a parent who educate them about values of life, discipline, respect and humanity. If not, a coffee at seahouse and what follows next….??
Ismail’s visits to scholars was a blunder, sermons by imported scholars was yet the worst mistake Maldives has done. WHY? Listen to the recordings and you would find out why. Maldives will remain forever, a 100% muslim country and so we Maldivians. One thing we should be ashamed of ourselves is ‘pretending to practice islam’.
Ask a Maldivian waiter or room boy if Maldivians practice Islam. I have seen with my eyes in resorts and abroad on a number of occasions, Maldivians drinking alcohol, taking drugs and womanizing with just kids. It is happening in Male today among top people, and these people will never miss a prayer, a burial, a donation and their official wives in veils. Am I lying? or do you need pictures to prove? STOP HYPOCRISY people, Ismail said his feelings and may be its gods will that he was meant to die that way. We all believe god decides our birth, death and how it happens.
You who call themselves muslims and under darkness you become evil, please stop blaming kids like ismail and others. Stop using religion and blame others, stop pretending by being seen in mosques or donation lists. The money and material you give dont matter, it is your heart and decency to help.
The system, the family backgrounds and religious confusion is the cause of Ismail’s death and many to come.

  115. Ashfaq on Thu, 15th Jul 2010 7:12 PM

There’s no doubt that the promoters of “Atheism” had dragged us in to sort of arguments that we wanted least. We now have enough tensions in our country to “concentrate”. One way or another we are being tested.

The perfect opportunity they wanted is garbed out of this pathetic event of a young man committing suicide. Perfectly timed.

Let the disbelievers of GOD know, that we will not get intimidated by such tricks and traps.

We don’t want any of us to be unjustly treated.Sadly our moral values and faith has eroded in the past 30 to 40 years.

This is nothing but the prophesied end time scenarios by our beloved Prophet Mohamed (S.A.W).

Only thing we can do now is, try to protect our self with the knowledge of Truth from the Glorious Quran and Authentic Hadhits. And advice each other for truth & patience.

For those who reject our faith:
Are we to believe that ” BIG BANG” created a perfect universal system without any intervention of a super being ( We Mulims call him “Allah” {in Arabic, meaning Almighty Creator, God}) who is controlling the affairs of this universe and everything that is created, while it is totally against the scientific law where it is believed that every explosion will result in a chaotic situation. Are we to believe that we are here just to live a greedy life full of our own desires for an average 60-70 years and then end without any repercussions.I can ask several question for which they will never be able to give scientific explanations. But “Insha Allah”, we have all the answers. But I don’t intend to give a lecture on GOD’s existence. If anyone who want’s to know they can refer to the correct sources and learn from the stories and incidents around us.

SCIENCE IS ELIMINATING MODELS OF GOD BUT NOT GOD
Francis Bacon, the famous philosopher, has rightly said that a little knowledge of science makes man an atheist, but an in-depth study of science makes him a believer in God. Scientists today are eliminating models of God, but they are not eliminating God. If you translate this into Arabic, it is La illaha illal la, There is no god, (god with a small ‘g’ that is fake god) but God (with a capital ‘G’).

    Surah Fussilat:
“Soon We will show them our signs in the (farthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?” [Al-Quran 41:53]
    Source:http://www.islam101.com/tauheed/provingGodExists.htm
    ——————-

We(Humans and Jins) aren’t created accept to do all that pleases “GOD”. This has a very broader meaning. But to simplify: It means do all that is good for our self & others and forbid those things that harms our self and others and not to associate partners with the Almighty “GOD”. That is the correct meaning of “Ya’budhoon” or “Ibaadha” that is mistranslated very often as “worship”.

This is what the Glorious Quran teaches us.

ISLAM means “Peace acquired by submitting our will to Almighty GOD(in Arabic: Allah)” and a Muslim is a person who follows the Deen of ISLAM. “Deen” is mistranslated to word “Religion” very often because a perfect one single word for Deen is not there in English Language. Deen means “the way of life, code of conduct with the belief in or towards GOD”.

Let us all humans unite in a strong bond against “Shaithan” & “Shaithanism”,- who is a devoted enemy as informed and warned in the glorious Quran and almost all major scriptures of other faiths as well. The secret game of Shaithan – Deception towards all humankind is at it’s peak. Under the disguise of freedom, arts & culture and various other traps the humanity is enslaved to his desires as never before. He had been able to distance us humans from our real purpose of life and from our real belief. Of course for his support there are several amongst us humans who are enslaved and misguided by his deceptions who are now dedicated for him. In his party. We need to call them back to the reality to truth.

THE SLOGAN OF HUMANITY TODAY SHOULD BE, IN MY BELIEF ….
“LET SHAITHAN KNOW THAT WE ARE BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN HUMANITY DEVOTED TO PLEASE ALMIGHTY GOD, FOR PEACE AND REJECT ALL THAT IS WRONG”

We seek refuge from Almighty God against the Shaithan, the accursed one.

    THE BIGGEST MISCHIEF ON EARTH:
The “mischief” that was brought upon Europe because of Hitler, Mussolini, Lenin. And for that matter Mao of China as well. And many other tragic incidents recently and in the past. The main cause was that they all believed in themselves as Lords of their own by falsely misguided by the biggest lie that man had ever believed “The Evolution Theory or Darwin’s Theory”. Lets analyze the history, and learn real lessons out of it. If we are logical and truthful we will find the answers.

The killings and all corruptions on the land is out of desires of the people who does that while being misguided by the “Shiathan”.Some may try to dub it as a religious fight or others in the name of nation, pride, money, land and lust.

Instead of fighting amongst us humans, we must realize deceptions of “Shaithan” is the cause. We can be united against him if we are to save the Humanity.

Time is running out. Lets spread the word and save the humanity from yet another “mischief” of “Shaithan”.

May Almighty GOD grant as success here and hereafter and save us from the torment of hellfire. May Almighty GOD guide us to the straight path.

PEACE IS BETTER THAN HATRED AND WARS.
We don’t need to prove anyone wrong amongst us humans but some sort of actions will need counter actions. That is our human nature.I believe in fact that we must realize there are only two groups of people. Just to broadly identify them to start with: 1 is those who believe in “GOD” and in truth- The party of “GOD” and 2nd is those who are misguided by “Shaithan”(Satan,Iblis,devil-the accursed one) to believe in non-existence of GOD, to believe in others beside “GOD” or in wrong practices in the way of life – The party of Shaithan.

The Only acceptable way of life to Almighty GOD is the peaceful way of life with ourselves and others by submitting our trust and will to him alone (In Arabic it’s called “ISLAM). We are advised to do all that is righteous, forbid what is wrong and advice one another to Truth, and advice one another for patience.
    —————————
If some people are adamant and doesn’t believe, there is nothing we can do about it. Only we are to spread the Truth. If Only they knew “to believe and not to believe” is a choice they are making out of “freewill” God had willed for the Humans. Yet, with arrogance and of own desires to prove ones own “correctness” , some will reject the truth, or twist it in any way they want.

Allah knows Best. May Allah forgive us for our errors.
May Allah Guide those who are truthful to the reality.

    heck,

I’ve had more fruitful discussions with lamp-posts.

“We are greater patriots for not abandoning our liberal cultural values in favor of Arab/Afghan cultural practices.”

Only you would mistake ‘values’ for fashion sense.

On the other hand, I do believe that even when our ancestors were INDEED topless, all the men didn’t automatically consider it a justification for legitimate rape (as seems to be the case in your model Arab societies)

If you’re going to mock our Dhivehi culture – which has been Islamic for nearly a thousand years – then bear in mind that the Arabs were also pagans once.

If we have ‘God heads’ in our Museum, they have their Pyramids on full display.

Resorting to ridiculous nonsense is expected from people who have no concept of reason to base their arguments on.

Woe be to those who are born of Dhivehi parents, live in Dhivehi raajje, carry a Dhivehi passport, look like Dhivehin by race and ancestry, and still owe their allegiance to some backward foreign culture.

According to a study in the American Journal of American Psychiatry atheists have a substantial higher rate of suicide than people that have some type of religious affiliation.

I think this study shows how rewarding being an atheist can be….like being unhappy, unfulfilled, bitter, depressed, detached, and generally overall miserable people. The posts on this site authored by atheists seem to bare this conclusion out.

RESULTS: Religiously unaffiliated subjects had significantly more lifetime suicide attempts and more first-degree relatives who committed suicide than subjects who endorsed a religious affiliation. Unaffiliated subjects were younger, less often married, less often had children, and had less contact with family members. Furthermore, subjects with no religious affiliation perceived fewer reasons for living, particularly fewer moral objections to suicide. In terms of clinical characteristics, religiously unaffiliated subjects had more lifetime impulsivity, aggression, and past substance use disorder.
Here is the link to the study:http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/cont…

Published by the American Journal of Psychiatry. Hardly a religious organization. Again the reactions by our atheist friends here certainly shows their self-denial and willingness to face reality. For women, Sweden’s suicide rate is almost double that of the U.S.

Pitzer College sociologist Phil Zuckerman compiled country-by-country survey, polling and census numbers relating to atheism, agnosticism, disbelief in God and people who state they are non-religious or have no religious preference. These data were published in the chapter titled “Atheism: Contemporary Rates and Patterns” in The Cambridge Companion to Atheism, ed. by Michael Martin, Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, UK (2005). In examining various indicators of societal health, Zuckerman concludes about suicide:
Concerning suicide rates, this is the one indicator of societal health in which religious nations fare much better than secular nations. According to the 2003 World Health Organization’s report on international male suicides rates (which compared 100 countries), of the top ten nations with the highest male suicide rates, all but one (Sri Lanka) are strongly irreligious nations with high levels of atheism.

    Ashfaq,

It’s utterly pointless to attempt to show light to the willfully blind.

Your brand of ‘true Islam’ seems to have utterly positioned itself as an enemy of science – the very reason why so many Dhivehin reject it.

Your sentences display such remarkable ignorance of science – and total buying into the tired, worn out propaganda that has been debunked a million times in the last few decades.

I’m not a scientist, and yet I can blow holes in your ridiculous assertions with just a secondary level learning of science.

Here’s some choice sentence in your anti-science tirade, that you think is making a point for your religion.

“..to live a greedy life ..for an average 60-70 year..”

That average is a figure that is doubled from a few decades ago. Thanks to science (Immunization, nutrition, medicine, health care, diagnostics, X Rays, MRIs)

In fact, I believe the average life-expectancy in Afghanistan still hovers about the 40 mark.

“BIG BANG.. it is totally against the scientific law where it is believed that every explosion will result in a chaotic situation..”

Eh? You’re quoting your ignorance (in fact, not you OWN ignorance, but that of Adnan Oktar and fellow non-scientific ignoramuses) of science to disprove something that scientists overwhelmingly agree upon?

Was the ‘Big Bang’ even an ‘explosion’ the way you picture it your mind?

Besides, which scientific law says that explosions result in “chaotic situations”?

I’ve studied a fundamental law of thermodynamics that states the entropy of a closed system, which is not in equilibrium, will always increase.

The big bang is neither your average-ass imaginary “explosion” (Hint: Read into the origins of the usage of the term ‘Big Bang’) nor does the law thermodynamics often misquoted by arrogant, science and oxygen-deprived quacks who can’t differentiate between Evolution from the Big Bang make even the slightest case for your anti-science stance.

Hypocrisy is rampant here. And either due to ignorance or sheer stupidity, most are not even ashamed of it.

Most would get flared up, raise voice a few notches, at anyone who does not share muslim beliefs, as if by doing so, he is convincing the nearby crowd how devout a muslim he is. Yet that very person would jump at the next opportunity to have sex with any woman he can get lure to his bed, and would not shy away bragging about it.
Face the reality. Maldives is a dot on the map, with few resources. We depend entirely on tourism and very few other streams for our survival. Prior to the times of tourism, with nothing to talk of actually, the govt did the best they could; Keep people happy by ignorance, suppress any curiosity, exposure, education and turn to religion to be content. And we did that for the past centuries.

Even now, the propensity towards religion are by guys who are less fortunate in life (no real jobs, no family/support), because in doing so, he can level himself with the more fortunate and hard working guys and those who practically works day and night to build their lives. And then they become zealots/fanatics, preaching equality when the only work these fanatics do, is just preach hate sermons and instill bone shaking fear in others. And then they would promote reciting Quran endlessly, with absolutely no idea what they are saying. They also claim that the student who can pronounce arabic ‘Gaafu’ from deep down their throats is the best. I wonder why they dont suggest abolishing dhivehi language and promote arabic as the local language, because then, we would atleast understand Quran.

As a country we need to let loose the grip on religion. Otherwise it will be like a heavy anchor on progress. Be practical and decide wisely for the growth of the country and people. Educate the people and let them opt/live their own lives. True some will opt other beliefs, but religion is personal. You should never expect that by being 100%, the country Maldives will enter Heaven. We would go there by the merit of the individual. Maldives will probably be the first to be wiped out in the judgement day, irrespective of 100% or 10%. As a community, we need to establish the cultures that enables prosper socially, economically etc. We Maldivians are proud and intelligent. Why not create an environment where the best of them can express their talents, innovation etc.

I personally have no problem in his belief system. This is not a new thing, denying the truth was there from the beginning of the world. There were messengers, prophets who showed miracles, but still there were people who did not believe in God.

This guy seems to be frustrated or depressed and might have been looking for employment abroad. His claim that he fear for persecution may be to obtain EMPLOYMENT abroad and his suicide could be treated as purely for COMMERCIAL REASONS! Even many Muslims do this to obtain asylum abroad to get better paid jobs!

    Y says: Ashfaq,
Y says:”It’s utterly pointless to attempt to show light to the willfully blind.”

ME: Same to you? ;) How can you show us light while you and your kind are in darkness? Get practical. We will not be intimidated by your words of anger out of your hatred and foolishness.

Y says:”your brand of ‘true Islam’ seems to have utterly positioned itself as an enemy of science – the very reason why so many Dhivehin reject it.”

ME: We are not. You and your like are! “Enemies of Science, logic, factual and obvious evidences of GOD’s existence”. For your kind information at least most of “Dhivehin” does not reject it but enjoys it.

Y says:” Your sentences display such remarkable ignorance of science – and total buying into the tired, worn out propaganda that has been debunked a million times in the last few decades.”

ME: Oh, Really! OK! I guess your supreme knowledge of science is one factor that you are rejecting “GOD”. But did you know that most of the famous scientist believes in GOD’s existence, but not models of gods. I don’t have any reason to believe you are one of them. Are you?

Check it out yourself: Famous Scientists Who Believed in God:
    See the link: http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/sciencefaith.html

The way they believe might be different but they all agreed in someway that GOD exists. This is the common term of understanding for all humans. The solution for all differences of humanity is to believe that we all are coming from one single source “GOD” and to him that we shall return. Why are we the only “conqueror” of this earth while there are more physically powerful and bigger creatures in this world? They will never be able to dominate or rule over us because GOD has given us one of his best gifts. “Our brain: the ability to think and act upon our desires and findings.” Then why not we all ask over selves if it is logical for us to reject his existence? What do we get by rejecting him?

One simple answer is: the “mischief” that was brought upon Europe because of Hitler, Mussolini, Lenin. And for that matter Mao of China as well. And many other tragic incidents recently and in the past. The main cause was that they all believed in themselves as Lords of their own by falsely misguided by the biggest lie that man had ever believed “The Evolution Theory or Darwin’s Theory”. Analyze the history, and learn real lessons out of it. If we are logical and truthful we will find the answers.

As a matter of fact I believe more than 100% and I have enough proofs that the Glorious Quran is the best book of guidance and this book consists of over 1000 verses out of over 6200 verses (signs, proofs, teachings) that has scientific information that was only proven to be 100% in conformity with the established scientific findings and facts just recently (300-20 years: The Glorious Quran is 1400 Years Old).
And let me tell you The Glorious Quran is not a book of “Science” but a book of “SIGNS”.

Y says:”I’m not a scientist, and yet I can blow holes in your ridiculous assertions with just a secondary level learning of science.”

ME: So you are not? I got at least one honest answer from you while you chose to ignore my reply to you in a previous comment and got on to quote me out of context from a general comment I made. Welcome! Let’s see who is truthful and correct here as well. I’m not a scientist myself, I must admit that. But I can prove that “Established Science” does not go against any scientific facts given in the Glorious Quran. And let me tell you again that The Glorious Quran is not a book of “Science” but a book of “SIGNS, PROOFS, TEACHINGS “.

It consists of several social and ethical guidelines for humanity and even stories describing events of past as parables. You may come up with those so called contradictions that your kind had made up out of your own desire to disapprove this. But no worries. ;) Insha Allah, we have all the answers.

Y Says:”Here’s some choice sentence in your anti-science tirade, that you think is making a point for your religion.
“..to live a greedy life ..for an average 60-70 year..”

In fact, I believe the average life-expectancy in Afghanistan still hovers about the 40 mark.”

Me:What’s your point here? ;) Even if that is 20 or 60, it doesn’t matter. Your argument does not prove anything wrong that I have said.

By the way, let me give you a hint. The early Muslims developed all those medical scientific fundamentals that you are talking about. I’m sure you will know this but trying to conceal the truth just to prove a point. That is an old trick, my man… it won’t work now.

My text quoted out of context by Y: “BIG BANG.. it is totally against the scientific law where it is believed that every explosion will result in a chaotic situation..”

My actual text: Please go above to my comment : Ashfaq on Thu, 15th Jul 2010 7:12 PM
    That starts as….
“There’s no doubt that the promoters of “Atheism” had dragged us in to sort of arguments that we wanted least. We now have enough tensions in our country to “concentrate”. One way or another we are being tested”
…… and goes on to the below topic in the same comment…..
“Are we to believe that ” BIG BANG” created a perfect universal system without any intervention of a super being ( We Mulims call him “Allah” {in Arabic, meaning Almighty Creator, God}) who is controlling the affairs of this universe and everything that is created, while it is totally against the scientific law where it is believed that every explosion will result in a chaotic situation.”

Can you see the difference and trick he is doing here when he quotes me out of context and tries to prove me wrong. Oh GOD! These people will try and do anything and everything that will make them feel good.

But no worries, you gave me another point and proof for me to lay down to my views. I’ll prove that both ways are correct.

Y says:”Eh? You’re quoting your ignorance (in fact, not you OWN ignorance, but that of Adnan Oktar and fellow non-scientific ignoramuses) of science to disprove something that scientists overwhelmingly agree upon?”

ME: Well I am aware there is a misconception on the actual BIG BANG theory and explosion phenomenon. But the scientists that you are talking about are still wondering about the theory. I am also aware that the BIG BANG basically talks about expanding universe. Even then the point is, that was even mentioned in the Glorious Quran.

Y says:Was the ‘Big Bang’ even an ‘explosion’ the way you picture it your mind?
Besides, which scientific law says that explosions result in “chaotic situations”?

Me: No, it is not my way of picturing but the same scientists that you are talking about had produced numerous documentaries that depict it as a primary explosion. And I don’t find any fault with them. Their way of description is widely believed. As a matter of fact can you prove that there wasn’t any explosion in the initial stage of formation of the universe? You will only have one single answer “NO”.

But I have a hint for you: There was a primary explosion. But not the type of explosions you see it in this world. Weird? OK let me introduce to you one simple concept. We are humans and GOD is the almighty creator and for him it’s just his will and things will become created or destroyed the way he wishes. It must be very difficult to understand? Or you must be searching for some sorts of bashing words in your mind to counter this. Our human knowledge and logic is too inferior and can never be compared to GOD’s wisdom, power and knowledge.

THE Big Bang does not eliminate the fact that Universe was created in such a perfect manner , a system by a supernatural being who is far superior to be understood by our tiny little minds (We call him Almighty GOD, In Arabic “Allah”)

Are you telling me you and your kind are much more superior than the scientists who have established the most needed scientific facts and finding for the sake of humanity. Are we to believe you and your kind are much intelligent than those famous scientists who dedicated their entire life to bring to us such wonders and merciless of science in the light of their studies and experiments (most of those findings only gave proof to the correctness and divinity of the Glorious Quran and none of those had gone against any scientific fundamental information given in the Glorious Quran). Then who are ignorant? Us or your kind? I feel sorry for you.

Allah advices us all in Glorious Quran to search for the clues and facts and that he will make it known to us through the signs in his creations. (Here “us” means humanity as a whole. Don’t jump up with conclusions saying that then why all the findings were brought to existence by Non-Muslims. I have given a clue to that as well. And for more information you can do your research on scientific explorations my Muslims)

Y says: “I’ve studied a fundamental law of thermodynamics that states the entropy of a closed system, which is not in equilibrium, will always increase.”

ME: OK, explain it to me in a layman’s language. I am a layman as far as science is concerned. I thought you too admitted the same. In laymen’s language it is saying somewhat what I have written. Don’t try to fool us with your disbelief and superiority attitude. You don’t even know the basic principles of science and the scientific explorations, and don’t have a clue to differentiate between established facts of science and theories of science. Sorry but you deserve all the harsh criticism that we can target to you and your kind. You welcomed this.

On the other hand the beauty of the Glorious Quran is: God knows most of us would be so called “laymen” and revealed his signs, proofs, teachings through his prophets in the simplest manner that all can understand. The last and the final revelation was revealed through Prophet Mohamed (S.A.W), The Glorious Quran.

Y Says: The big bang is neither your average-ass imaginary “explosion” (Hint: Read into the origins of the usage of the term ‘Big Bang’) nor does the law thermodynamics often misquoted by arrogant, science and oxygen-deprived quacks who can’t differentiate between Evolution from the Big Bang make even the slightest case for your anti-science stance.

ME: The Glorious Quran is for those who think as well. If you are blindly believing all the things that you see and here without fact checking then I would like to return the same incendiary comments to you that was made to me on the above paragraph.

Difference is for us our supreme guidelines are in the Glorious Quran and modern established science has only made us closer to our creator.

Your kinds are dumb, deaf and blind. “They will twist everything for their own convenience out of hypocrisy and ignorance and disbelief.”

Let the world know that these type of people are none but from the “Party of Satan” who are devoted to lead the believers of GOD astray.

Don’t get offended but accept that is the reality. After all you have confessed your way of life and belief yourself. But still GOD is more merciful than you can even imagine. If someone truly and sincerely repents and get back to the path of GOD, he is surely to forgive. He is Oft-forgiving and most merciful to all his creations.

And if you have no desire to repent then it’s not our duty to force you to. We have nothing to do with your way of life and belief and don’t try to interfere with our way of life and our belief.

A person who have faith in God Almighty and believe in the Judgment Day, Heaven and Hell will not commit suicide. For them the Hereafter is much better; and taking own life is a sin in every major religion.
An atheist would apparently commit suicide and end his life in the most tragic way because he believes in non of the above. So faced with pressure of life, the best alternative is to commit suicide. But what an stupid cowardice act.It suggests how feeble their belief is.

Hey Hack! some very interesting points that you are making on this thread. Great Work. I Like you brother, for your wisdom and efforts on unveiling these so called “Scientists” of our Country.

These Supremacist thinkers just had a glimpse of some hardworking real scientist’s findings and facts, then are mixing with the truth twisters stories to deceive the average “laymen” like us who aren’t scientists, without even thinking that this is the age of knowledge and science. The famously said 21st Century. One guy is the famous Atheist Richard Dawkins who is a British Ethologist,Evolutionary biologist who is one of the stanchest believer of Darwin’s theory that actually led the most of Europe to the Atheistic conviction beliefs , that again was the root cause of the major two world wars Yr 1918:WW1, & Yr 1935:WW2). Dawkins is out to prove their theory through new findings but yet he is just putting up theories and deceptions to mislead us again after Darwin. I don’t deny he must have come out with some good studies that can benefit, but you can’t discount the fact lot of findings and theories had gone wrong. Some findings by the same scientists who initially claims a view point and than changes through new and improved results. Science does not explain everything , and yet it will be evolving through the ages till end time.We don’t deny that evolution exists. It exists, our human mind had evolved during past and in a vigorous speed during past 1400 years with the help of facts and clues given in the Glorious Quran. There was an age of darkness for Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Ages) and their rise came after the fall of Islamic Empires during 14th Century. They Studied Arabic, Came to Islamic Universities and to Islamic Scholars (of Logic, Science and you name it all the fields ) and then they developed all the modern science and technological advances. We respect their work but we do not respect people like Darwin and his followers those who are just trying to deceive Humanity with the use of science. They are followers of Satan and their hidden agenda is to take over the world.

Let’ See What Dawkins has to say on Evolution:
    Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Dawkins
In a December 2004 interview with American journalist Bill Moyers, Dawkins said that “among the things that science does know, evolution is about as certain as anything we know”. When Moyers questioned him on the use of the word theory, Dawkins stated that “evolution has been observed. It’s just that it hasn’t been observed while it’s happening.” He added that “it is rather like a detective coming on a murder after the scene… the detective hasn’t actually seen the murder take place, of course. But what you do see is a massive clue… Huge quantities of circumstantial evidence. It might as well be spelled out in words of English.”
    ————

Well, He says it himself. And who says we Muslims does not believe there is evolution. But yes, If you mean we the humans came out of Apes, No, Thanks… there is no point for us to believe that at all. You and your like can do so and act like so.

“This is what I need to bring to attention of everyone. Those who deny “GOD” or deny certain laws of ISLAM are totally unaware of the reality. They are mislead by their own desires or out of confusion created by Satan. The community they live is to be blamed. (The leaders and parents of this generation inclusive.)

    Facts:
*40% of our youth is intoxicated by illegal drugs and above youth age tycoons are spreading this “Sickness” for their convenience, as a lucrative business.
*Killings & Gang violence on the streets is now a simple thing (of Drugs and Corruption). No one bothers about it.

*Corruption is leading to all the above.
*Mistrust on the trustworthy and trust on the Mafia Style is established.
    ———————————-

I believe this not an over-nightly created crisis in the wake of a new era in our political spectrum. But rather due to years of negligence and misguidance from this community.

OUR ISLAMIC FABRIC WAS WORN OUT LONG AGO. THE BLAME GOES FOR THE WHOLE COMMUNITY. NOT JUST ONE PERSON. IN YOUR CONTEXT IT IS MORE FAIR TO BLAME THE PREVIOUS REGIME.

AT LEAST THIS REGIME IS SOMEWHAT HONEST. THEY ARE NOT CONCEALING ANYTHING UNDER THE “HUDHU FOSHA” LIKE THE PREVIOUS ONE.

    No.

I am not a scientist – but I do have more than a passing interest on the subject.

'Qur'an is not a book of science, it is a book of SIGNS'

    *Groan*

Stop repeating the tired, worn out talking points of Adnan Oktar and Naik and passing it off as your viewpoint.

And stop pretending that I have quoted you "out of context". I am quite familiar with those very quotes right from the time I first read them at the age of 10.

Science and Enlightenment ARE the biggest enemies of Wahhabism/Salafism – for this ideology DEPENDS on ignorant, underachieving riffraff to base itself on.

I am entirely in agreement that the early Muslims were great scientific and intellectual heavyweights.

But the very fact that you have to go back 9 centuries to find any Muslim achievers worth mentioning is a point made for ME – and other Muslims who are PRO-Science and PRO-Englightenment.

You fear science. You fear knowledge.

You fear the law of evidences and experimentation. You like to cherry pick what you want and denounce what you cannot digest.

Science doesn't work like that. And it shouldn't work like that, or we wouldn't be enjoying the overwhelming achievements of the scientific method.

Your religious insecurity is not a good enough reason for all Muslims to shun science.

Wahhabism/Salafism and Science cannot co-exist – and we have to look no further than recent Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia, the "ideal Sunni states" for proof of this.

Wahhabism is a failure. A historical blunder and a curse imposed upon the Muslim society.

It takes the mind numbing hypocrisy of your ideology to enjoy all the fruits of science in every breath you take, while constantly belittling its achievements to further promote your ideology.

I have asked this question before (and never received any answer), and I ask this again.

What are the achievements of Wahhabism, if any? Ever? At any point of history?

There isn't. None. I dare you to point out a SINGLE achievement of your backward arab filth.

We can blame the parents, we can blame the education or we can blame the social community. But the only tortured soul who has to appeal his actions to god is the victim himself. Victim because of his own cowardly decisions. His life was given to him by a power way greater than anything any human being can imagine. It will be taken back from him in due course, but he has disrupted the natural course of his destiny by taking his own life. our lives are not ours to end.
I know that atheist believes that our creation and birth to the world can be explained by simple scientific explanations. But who are we kidding, our creation, the world and the universe go beyond science. its the divine signature of god who created all and who will destroy all.
I don’t sympathize with all who are mourning the death of a coward. I don’t hate him for not embracing the religion of peace. I feel sorry for him, that he had to take his own life because he has forgotten the one thing he was given to do when he was sent to this world, to live his life out as a Muslim. That was all what was expected of him and nothing more. He failed his family, he failed his education and he failed him self.
There will be more emerging in the coming years, as Maldives struggle with youths who cannot digest the simplest of truths. The truths that paved the foundations of our constitution, democracy and law. That to be a Maldivian is to be a Muslim but go on ahead, fight for your claim to be only a Maldivian and nothing more. But remember, when the day comes, only one question would matter, did you practice Islam or did you turn your back on Allah?
I want to say may the man rest in peace but he won’t. He won’t ever rest in peace.

    It should be;

“Air traffic controller who COMMITTED SUICIDE sought asylum for fear of religious persecution”

    Not “HANGED air traffic controller”

No one else, but he hung himself!

It is quite understandable that JJ would try to make MINIVAN NEWS articles more “EYE CATCHING” to economically active Maldivians and foreigners including tourists, to increase the opportunity of securing more banner advertisements from tour operators and airlines, so that ANNI’s brother who runs MINIVAN NEWS can beat HAVEERU DAILY’s number of hits register on the internet.

To be succesfull in this endeavour, JJ has to justify to his clients that it would be commercially worthwhile to advertise on MINIVAN NEWS WEBSITE.

It’s also proportionately realted to the EDUCATION MINISTER’S policy to change ISLAM AND DHIVEHI as optional subjects in higher secondary education syllabus!

So they can slowly deteriorate the need among Maldivians to communicate in Dhivehi for any purpose, thus, most if not all switching to English and thereby getting rid of the impediment to brainwash the Maldivians, with the overwhelming intermeddling of English speaking foreigners in Maldivians’ socio-economic and religious affairs via MINIVAN NEWS WEBSITE!

  197. IsmailRai on Sat, 17th Jul 2010 2:58 PM

    Ofcourse god knows best.
Most religions has a “god” who knows it all.

I am a Maldivian and a muslim. I dont for 1 second believe the crap that comes out of Fareed, Naik, or Ilyas. It is these that make our religion so unpopular.

    What I do believe is
    a) You should be kind to your family, friends, neighbours etc.
    b) You should help anyone who asks for it, in any way you can.
    c) You pray. But i dont believe in the current practice. Personally I don’t understand Arabic, and the recitations during prayers make no sense to me. But I do it, cos i was brought up like that. However, it would make more sense to me if they were in a language I understand. I believe praying achieves three key things for us; build society, exercise, and spiritual calmness. I dont believe god wants more from us on prayers.
    d) Against Reciting Quran in Arabic. I don’t for a second believe it helps me. It would help me lots if I read Dhivehi or English transliteration. I believe Quran is there guide me to live life, and it doesnt do me any good reciting it in arabic Raivaru. I have been told transliterations are not accurate, but for me, some light is still better than pitch black, which is the case with Arabic. As a Maldivian, I would laugh if somebody tries to pass / talk to be in Raivaru chant. I feel it would be the same for an Arab, with the chanting recitations of Quran.

But I have questions that bug me
    a) The only reason why I am a muslim is because I was born here and told that this is the best. BUT, is it? When the MFxxker Z Naik, was asked that question, he talked of food. There are 4+ billion who believe otherwise. There must be something there. I am not saying it is better, i dont know it, and I give them the benefit of doubt; I don’t believe they could all be wrong.
    b) It would really be easy for our “God” to prove his existence, in a way even a stupid one to realize it. Irrefutably. I don’t believe this is the case, because there are so many disputing the case, and they are not all stupid. or ignorant. After all, heaven is not a small place like Maldives, and the objective would be to allow maximum entrants. So why chuck out 4/5 of population?
    c) I believe the other religions are following their ‘gods’ in the same manner are we are. sincerely believing that it is their salvation. But WHY? Why should it be so, if what we claim is true; that we the only and best. Which cannot be doubted by any logical person.
    d) I have trouble applying logic to some religious stances. They just dont make sense.

The religious freedom you are talking about is a main aspect of western
    man-mad(e) democracy!

Not only religious freedom, but any freedom or liberty you can think of HAS to be given and guaranteed LEST they become automatic HYPOCRITES!

    No.
You are wrong. I stated the law of Entropy about how it relates to -> closed systems <-, and you think it applies to your misbegotten idea of 'big bang'.
I am not a scientist – but I do have more than a passing interest on the subject.
'Qur'an is not a book of science; it is a book of SIGNS'

ME: How pathetic you are. From 10 years? How old are you now? I knew you will not have any explanation in simple language. This is exactly why I feel sorry for you and your kind. “Blind Believers” Unaware of where you are heading. Here, learn something from the “Layman”.

By the way I must admit I am a student and one of my “lecturers” is Dr.Zakir Naik. I like his simplicity in his answers and simple logic he uses to illustrate complex phenomenon and subjects. As for Adnan Oktar, I have only heard about him from you. But Insha Allah I will do a research on him soon.

I will repeat it if necessary a million or even billion times. Because for fact I know it's Truth and 1000% correct.

"'Qur'an is not a book of science; it is a book of SIGNS" It's the divine book and word of Allah preserved for 1400 Years and will be till last day, end of times.

I am not pretending. The case is as clear as crystal. Everyone with commonsense will see it so obviously. I think now you are pretending that you didn't quote me out of context. Isn’t that more correct?

Why are you talking about Wahhabism/Salafism? I don’t get it. Are you trying to label all Muslims as one sect? Or do you think that everyone who says Allah is one, God is one and we have to live by the rule of our Creator has to be one of them.
I am a Muslim. Nothing more, Nothing Less.

ME: Just to illustrate one source of information on Entropy:
    Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy
Entropy is a macroscopic property of a system that is a measure of the microscopic disorder within the system. It is an important part of the second law of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic systems are made up of microscopic objects, e.g. atoms or molecules, which "carry" energy. In applied thermodynamics, as a matter of convention, entropy is measured in units of energy per temperature (SI: joules per kelvin). If thermodynamic systems are described using thermal energy instead of temperature, then entropy is just a number by which the thermal energy in the system is multiplied. The resulting energy is an energy for which no information is available which would be required to convert the energy in technical systems from one form (e.g. electrical) into another form (e.g. mechanical).
In technical applications, machines are basically energy conversion devices. Thus, such devices can only be driven by convertible energy. The same applies to biological organisms. The product of thermal energy (or the equivalents of thermal energy) and entropy is "already converted energy". This is the reason why Rudolf Clausius in 1850 coined the term "entropy" based on the Greek εντροπία [entropía], from εν- [en-] and τροπή [tropē] (turn, conversion).
    Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy

This Law in “Laymen’s” language is talking about disorder, chaotic situations, and its measurements. Entropy is a measure of disorder. That is simple as that but I know it has more complexities. Everyday average man does not have to have in-depth knowledge of Science to go on living a peaceful life. If the “Atheists” are up to belittle the average person they can do so. We will not. Our “Deen” advices to teach each other and If we don’t know to go and ask those with knowledge. Every Muslim must seek knowledge. In fact every human being should seek knowledge. I admit I am a human and can make mistakes. But I will not pretend to know everything.

All controlled events might not end perfectly as it is planed, but surely any uncontrolled situation will result in chaos and disorder. That’s where we are making a point here.

If you don’t understand the relation between Big Bang and Entropy, It doesn’t mean I am wrong and you are correct. We both are “laymen” as far as Science is concerned. Why not you do your research again?

Now read below statement by Dr.Brown & my statement again and you might understand what I am talking about:

By the way I am using everyday average man’s language:

“The Big Bang may explain the origin of the universe, but it doesn’t explain the origin of the primordial dust cloud. This dust cloud (which, according to the theory, drew together, compacted and then exploded) had to come from somewhere. After all, it contained enough matter to form not just our galaxy, but the billion other galaxies in the known universe. So where did that come form? Who, or what, created the primordial dust cloud?”
-Dr. Laurence Brown, Medical Doctor, USA-
    Source: http://www.islamreligion.com/articles/524/

ME:THE Big Bang does not eliminate the fact that Universe was created in such a perfect manner , a system by a supernatural being who is far superior to be understood by our tiny little minds (We call him Almighty GOD, In Arabic “Allah”)

    Yaamyn Says:
I am entirely in agreement that the early Muslims were great scientific and intellectual heavyweights.

ME: So, you knew that and was trying to conceal that. What a hypocrite.

But the very fact that you have to go back 9 centuries to find any Muslim achievers worth mentioning is a point made for ME – and other Muslims who are PRO-Science and PRO-Englightenment.

ME: ? Why? Why isn’t that a point? Because you wanted me not to mention that?

Sure lot’s of Muslims and in fact all true Muslims are for Knowledge and exploration.

Yaamyn Says: You fear science. You fear knowledge.
You fear the law of evidences and experimentation. You like to cherry pick what you want and denounce what you cannot digest.

ME: I think I should have said that to you and your like.

Yaamyn Says:Science doesn't work like that. And it shouldn't work like that, or we wouldn't be enjoying the overwhelming achievements of the scientific method.

ME: Science works like what? Can you explain this statement? Let me explain.

Science (from Latin: scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise of gathering knowledge about nature and organizing and condensing that knowledge into testable laws and theories (Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science)

Yaamyn Says:Your religious insecurity is not a good enough reason for all Muslims to shun science.

ME: What makes you think that? Any proof. This is an empty statement.

I'm a Muslim and I'm tankful to be a Muslim. I feel more secure and happy even when I fail in several day to day things I do. Like all humans I have to go through the hardship of life as that is the test I have to pass. Believing isn't a conditional thing. It's an unconditional thing we have to do. Believe or not the hardships of life will be a part of the package in life. For that we have to practice our patience and work hard and even getup and run at the most difficult situations of our time here. I am more than happy to believe in Allah, & I know Allah will show me the right path the next day. And Insha Allah, Always there's light at the end of tunnel.

Yaamyn Says:Wahhabism/Salafism and Science cannot co-exist – and we have to look no further than recent Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia, the "ideal Sunni states" for proof of this.

ME: What about WW1, & WW2- And all the atrocities of recent and past. Why are you stuck with Afghanistan? Even they are much better than the WW1 & WW2 era people of Europe. At least they didn't kill their own people in Millions.Didn't you know these nations are corrupted when the European powers came there and occupied them and left them with a state of confusion. Be practical. Do your History lessons first.

& About Saudi Arabia: Their Leadership is corrupt but the majority of them are good Muslims. They follow the Islamic Sharia and did you know that is the only Country that has the least crime records.

I know you will come up with some unsubstantiated comments very soon. But No Worries. I'm ready for anything. Try me!

Yaamyn Says:Wahhabism is a failure. A historical blunder and a curse imposed upon the Muslim society.
It takes the mind numbing hypocrisy of your ideology to enjoy all the fruits of science in every breath you take, while constantly belittling its achievements to further promote your ideology.

ME: The case is clear: I have already explained my view point. If you think you have the right to utter anything that comes to your mind then it explains itself.

“Dumb, Deaf and Blind” That is the best way I can characterize you and your kind. Sorry but there is no better compliment I can award right now.

Yaamyn Says: I have asked this question before (and never received any answer), and I ask this again.

Yaamyn Says:What are the achievements of Wahhabism, if any? Ever? At any point of history?
There isn't. None. I dare you to point out a SINGLE achievement of your backward arab filth.

ME: I think my answer for that is clear from my view point. I don’t know why you are so fond of Wahhabism? Do you know anything about them? That is a topic we can discuss on a common term. ;) I hope you got my point.

All I know is that “I am just a Muslim, bowing down to Allah and him alone; I seek his guidance for me for all my fellow humans. “

I think its high time we need serious reform on human rights coupled with religious fundamentalism. As a Muslim: He should not have been bullied to the extent that he would have commited suicide. The family and friends should have left the government to deal with the problem. Nevertheless, there is no one to blame other than himself for taking his own life. No matter how much we wish him eternal peace, he will never recieve it.

As a Maldivian: I cannot accept any religion other than Islam here in the Maldives. The minority should respect the views of the majority, and any converts should be reported and given a choice of which country they want to live in. As I say: You are free to your own choices and your beliefs, but if they contradict the belief of the majority, you still have the freedom to go where you want to practice your beliefs.

If you want to blame his death on anything, do not try and mislead people by blaming it on the beautiful religion of Islam, when it is in fact, caused by societal and cultural reasons.

This story is now published on BBC website ” check DO for the link”… This kinda declaration of war on Maldivians. So sad after all I am a MDP member and I trusted Anni and these folks. Now everything is so clear about their intentions. I have been a big fool all these years..See how these people are framing our beloved country internationally..snifffffffffffffffffffff….. it is a declaration of war . They want to break and jeopardize somethings that are so dear to us.. our religion and our own unique culture .. and they want to spread hate towards islam throughout the world. These Europeans are all racists. Sadly the very people who are doing this are freely roaming in this countries soil biting us venomously to a slowly death.
So sad .. we are just fools fools fools dumb heads. All is lot …it is inevitable we are powerless to stop this satanic invasion unless if we all unite and do something and surely Allah will help use as Almighty have saved us before.

this is not a criticism, but an observation; most of these young men, extreme or otherwise in the islamic world grow up with the view islam is the best. islam sees itself as most perfect expression of god’s monotheistic massage. if i were to put it in computer terms, it sees itself as god’s 3.0, it seems christianity as God’s 2.0, sees judaism as god’s 1.0 and hindhuism as 0.0.
and i think part of the dissonance when they go America or europe, is that in their identity they have the most perfect system, but in real life, their countries are economically behind, in terms of education behind, health care behind and there’s real cognitive dissonance there. If i’ve got the best operating system , why am i behind? and i think that produces lot of rage in some young muslim men. some express these anger with xenophobia and hatred towards west or some extreme acts of terror.
but if you think about it, their hatred, if you dig really deep and see, its actually about how much these people really hate about their own govt, their own religion who keep them down, repressed and behind.

Just a thought for few here who is talking about western culture and values..

Bodu Kashi Li Buruma: You’re quite simply mental. But you’re eventually going to learn that people just laugh when you make absurd statements which you can’t back up, we have education and the internet; free dissemination of information and people who can think for themselves, which is the enemy of such absurd propaganda.
The BBC just reported an incident which happened. Same as Minivan News did. News services report the news, it’s their purpose (duh). Do you think that this incident should never have been reported by any news organisations anywhere at all, because it raises issues that are difficult for some Maldivians to contemplate, or because it goes against the Maldivian way of stifling any kind of public debate? Imagine if everyone here was talking about what happened at the airport but no news services reported it. That would be extremely worrying. That is what happens under dictatorships, like in Myanmar, and to a lesser extent in China, Russia etc… Sure, we have no freedom of religious expression here, but at least Minivan News is not censored and so is free to report the news, whether it’s good or bad news; news you want to hear or news you really don’t want to hear. That’s the bottom line. You can claim it is censored if you wish, until you turn blue, but you’ll just be showing your ignorance. (And no, I don’t work there, but no doubt you’ll suggest I do because I’m speaking in their favour…!)
On a final note, this news story has gone way further than just the BBC, it has been covered across Asia, the Middle East, Australia, continental Europe, North and South America – you name it, they’ve heard it. The world’s eyes are on the Maldives. This incident is going to open up public debate and the days of being able to stifle public debate are numbered, like it or not.

Every aspect of this country (except the natural beauty) is quite suicidal.
Look at the capital … despite the 1900 islands we have, the whole population and half the population of bangladhesh is living here.
I am the guys neigbour … i can understand why he is a jumper. I mean we live in little houses thats like packed with people .. no space for anyone to do anything let alone switch religions.

and the guys who think is god’s will, and he’s rotting in hell, open up yo mind fools. what u think gad put u here to grow a beard, bend over five times daily and then wear terrorist uniforms?? man if there was a heaven they wont accept yo appication… im sure they dont take dumbasses in hheaven…
we dont even need to dress up in desert clothes!! but u see these fools all dressing up.. this without even knowing where the preachings come from..

When i was younger my grandma said that neil armstrong heard the Bangi when he was on the moon and converted to a muslim… i saw this bluff as the general attitude our religion emits.

if u dont believe me check our history of convertion.
Some sultan was dressing up as a monster and gangbanging the young girls in Male’ when some traveller busted him out… and then made a deal with the sultan to keep this secret unless they all convert… thats a foundation with cracks.

Most of the younger generation stays muslim because they got no choice.. look at most of us, our clothes, our culture, our actions… this aint no musim country..
this is a hundred percent muslim country by force.

fyi: i beleive in god… but not the political-religious propaganda that people came up with along the ages only to mislead and rip off the ignorant,

May God’s peace and blessings be upon Ismail and may God grant him eternal bliss of heaven – I am sure now he would realize that God really exists.

Now having said the above, why are we, who call ourselves, so mean towards people? What we do not realize is that God almighty has given us FREEDOM OF RELIGION in his last and final revelation, Quran. And who are we to tell another human being how we should live our lives? The religion or whatever belief one follows has nothing to do with another human being; it is a matter between oneself and one’s creator, God.

God also says in the Holy Quran that he only accepts from his creators Islam as a religion, which means in the sight of God Islam is the only true religion, however, God, most merciful, does not FORCE any religion on anyone, he has left one to choose his/her own belief.

If God wanted every human being to accept Islam as a religion, he would not have any problem FORCING by his WILL everyone to believe in Islam.
So to all those who think they are the custodians of faith, meaning Islam, leave other be with their own believe – no one has the right to judge anyone regarding his/her belief and I personally DO NOT believe Ismail will go to HELL like many of those who have cursed him in here.

God is more merciful than any of us can think he can be, for God does not say in the holy Quran that anyone who commits suicide will be banished to HELL for eternity. God says in the Holy Quran that IDOL WORSHIP is the ONLY unforgivable SIN by God, if maintained till one’s death – as per what we know, Ismail DID NOT commit idol worship or Shirk.

So I advise all of you to stop this cursing and “I am in the right path” attitude, for God only knows the destiny of Ismail.

    Salaam!

No word can explain you and your so called “liberal” ideologies that discounts any view point that doesn’t match with your “reasoning”. I’ll not say that you are a hypocrite but just misguided by those hypocrites within our community.

In fact that is the beauty of our human minds. Out of freewill given by GOD and choices we make, we can make any statement in anyway we want and stick to that no matter what the real issue is. I think you need to “grow up” and understand the real issue here first.

THE ISSUE IS:It’s about blaming ISLAM & MUSLIMS in general due to one pathetic event. & those points that you are trying to make just don’t come even close to the atrocities that I am talking about.

If there’s any thing in extreme is “extreme westernization of this society (in wrong manner)”. (Please note that I’m not against West but against all the “wrongs” of West (there are some beautiful practices within them as well) and for that matter all the “wrongs” of Pre-Islamic cultures and attitudes of this society and all those so called “Muslim” societies as well.)

A True Muslim society will be peaceful, honest, loving, merciful and just.

“There is nothing such as absolute evil or absolute saints amongst humans.” We humans will make mistakes, will be erroneous but that doesn’t mean we have to be on that path forever. The moment we repent sincerely and get back to the path of Allah, Insha Allah, surely he will forgive. Allah is oft-forgiving and most merciful.

But don’t you think the same argument “…somehow supported by all non-muslim States, which can mislead the uninformed.” by you fits to my view point as well. In Fact Saudi Arabia is the Country that has least crimes. Not that they have an intelligent policing there, but they (Majority of them) at least practice our Deen (ISLAM) correctly. And the law is so strong and punishments for crimes so severe a criminal will be forced to think 1000% to commit a crime. However I must admit their top brass leadership is corrupt, But not the majority people & judiciary system and that’s what this Country needs. Law and order and the rule of law. @ashfaq

i have my reasons. Once i heard in sheik Ilya’s sermon in Islamic center. he said that if we have cancer in our body or organ we have to remove that part as soon as possible otherwise it will spread whole body. its very true since we don’t have cure for it we have to remove that part. And he compared this one with drug addict as he is cancer in society. His solution was execute him. For me this is getting rid of problem rather than deal with it. some of addicts enroll to rehabilitation program come out clean and stay as sober. Believe it or not some turns to god’s help and it works for them.

My point is harsh punishment on victims would not help. do u think Nazim will be good Muslim now? He had no other choice. In my opinion he was forced. No one can believe make him believe unless he has not doubt in his heart. its between him and god.

i know Islam is under mutiny by Maldivians specially women. In religious events child marriage, female genital mutilation are encouraged. Sheik Fareed said more women are like to go hell as they are the one spreading evil the society and easily get corrupted. can you believe it?. If Maldivian females get corrupted that easily so am i. we went same schools, taught and share same value by our parents. i don’t think these things will go unchallenged in our society.

i believe atheism should not be encouraged in our country neither should these harsh practices by Islamic ministry. We came so far as free society.

As you said no society will be crime free.In saudi crime rate is very low. As my knowledge (various resources), several criminal complaints are resolved outside formal judicial institutions and as a consequence remain undocumented by the police. As you know if one murders, he will not be forgiven unless a relative of victim forgive him or pay fidyah usually sum equals to 100 camel. Most of sexual offenses are not reported cause of family values and culture. Its easy and better always carry on with life like it never happened rather pursue with legal battle.

My final word on this topic.

I personally don’t know late Mr.Ismail Mohamed Didi. But just when i saw the picture on (http://www.prayformaldives.blogspot.com/), from my heart I can only wish I could have done something to avert this.
I heart felt with deep sorrow for losing one young man, one of us Maldivian.
I wish I could have met him just few days before this event. Just a wish. I know it’s not up to us to change it anymore. Allah knows best. What had happened cannot be changed. That is over. But his memories will be cherished by his friends and family and we can learn a lesson out of this tragic incident.

We can with Allah’s will, change the fate of our destiny as long as we are living and through our righteous deeds and actions and supplications.Every soul will taste death. Like some may suggests “death is not evil always”.

If I have hurt anyone’s feelings I apologize and I want to let all commentators know my intention was not that but to defend fallacies against ISLAM & MUSLIMS that was too generalized by some. (If my comments are read carefully that should be quite obvious for everyone)

Last but not least. I thank all those who are honest and truthful. I strongly denounce any remarks of contentment towards this tragic event by anyone and that should not be our way of expressing our free opinions. We have to reason and argue with wisdom.

May Allah unite our community in Truth.

  253. Theo Mastema, Rotterdam, Netherland on Fri, 23rd Jul 2010 6:17 AM

    Dear Bismuth,
Why do you think I don’t know about those facts?
My comment was on the present situation, so I didn’t feel the need to put it in a broader historical context.
    Is that arrogant?

You are right to point at the shedding of blood caused by Europeans, but unfortunately you omit the atrocities committed by others. That is called “using a double standard”.
It is a fact that powerful cultures have the tendency to -to say the least- suppress people, but don’t act as if only Europeans are guilty.

However, as I said, I was commenting on the present situation in which I was appalled by the trouble someone encounters when he sets himself free from his religion.
This was even reinforced when reading quite some of the comments on this page.

So instead of referring to Google, I would have appreciated it if you’d have given an explanation why there is nothing wrong with bullying and ostracizing an apostate.
    That is the issue here.

Well said, but don’t you think your argument just fits to our point of view as well? This is the beauty of our mind and our reasoning. We will stick to our points no matter what and agree with others in a feeble way only in the next sentence to reject it beautifully.

The issue my friend is not known to you at correctly at all. We are living here and you are just referring to some comments of contentment on this tragic event that I myself totally reject and most of us as well.

In any community there will be tragic and unethical events that the whole community as a whole doesn’t agree with. It’s even the same at West and other parts of the world. The killings, corruption, prostitution, deceptions, and God knows all other evils that are taking place, are wide spread. You yourself will not condone such things even at your community. But you can’t stop them. You can voice your view and correct yourself and people around you. It’s not in your hands to rehabilitate the entire community. It has to come from the grass root level of individual responsibilities and end up in a collective effort of the community as a whole. Then, are we to blame you for the ills of your community? No! AND that is my point.

Don’t you think that is “DOUBLE STANDARD” in pointing finger in a generalized way towards ISLAM and MUSLIMS due to some acts that most doesn’t agree with. THAT IS THE ISSUE HERE. Obviously you pointed out the comments that you do not agree (BTW we too do not agree with those), and you chose to be silent and in agreement with the comments that you like out of your limited knowledge on ISLAM and it’s core principles. I don’t blame you for that. I will explain why?

That was the point made by my clues for you to refer (I’m glad you agree with those). We MUSLIMS (True Muslims) do not find any happiness in anyone’s death or suffering. That is the misconception that the West is having towards us due to continues media frenzy of “ISLAMOPHOBIA” spread for ages.

May Almighty GOD give you and all Humans the right guidance and truth.

  257. concerened citizen on Sat, 24th Jul 2010 2:31 AM

atheists, christian, Hindus and jews. we all have the right to live. not all muslims believe that everyone should bend to islam and force people into the religion. there are however extremists in the muslim religion who bend the core principles of islam and have stereotyped muslims as terrorists. these extremists are self-proclaimed messengers of god who manipulate religion and brainwash people into thinking that their way of living is the true path to heaven. islam does not support suicide or war. no suicide can be committed in the name of god as it is strictly forbidden in islam. the maldivian extremists mullah’s have successfully managed to brainwash the whole community into thinking that the only muslims deserve the right to live. maldivians have got to stop beleiving what the so called muslim scholars preach about islam and for jsut one second stop for a second a use your god given brain to think about what is right and wrong. it is known for a fact that during the life of Muhammadh (pbuh), the christians and the muslims lived harmoniously in one land. doesnt this tell you enough about how you should respect others beleifs and nt reject it just because its not the same as your beleifs. if you maldivians are so intimidated by other beleifs i suggest that you take a good look at your ageeda first. for someone who cannot tolerate or accept other beliefs in my opinion are insecure about their very own belief.
quit blaming others (the west and their culture) for causing so much hate towards islam, and take a good look at your own actions. suicide bombing, threatening and tormenting non muslims is not the true islam. islam is the religion of peace and the life of Muhammadh(pbuh) shows this very clearly.

    @Bismuth on Fri, 23rd Jul 2010 3:11 PM

You are right when you say I didn’t mention the comments rejecting the bullying of this young man.
However, I was commenting because I was shocked about the reason he hung himself, but also by the virulent comments by quite some of the people on this page and they all refer to their religion.
And even though I know there are wise and peaceful sayings in the Koran, I also know what it says about apostacy and atheists.

Concerning my mentioning of the term “double standard”: I don’t see where I applied this concept to Islam or muslims in general.

I told heck he did, because he was promoting his religion while he told atheists to shut up.
I agree that he has the right to promote his religion, but I also agree with atheists promoting their point of view. That is fair and balanced and not using a double standard.

I told you you did, because you named the European atrocities while omitting those by other powers e.g. those committed by muslim rulers, but as you’ve already noticed, I have no problem admitting the wrongdoings of my ancestors (or of the Dutch football team) and that is just because I don’t like to apply a double standard myself.

One little thing about my knowledge of Islam. I started informing myself about it already in the 1990′s, so I think it’s a little simple to conclude that I got my ideas just from the media frenzy.

The best to you and all readers and don’t forget: Sapere aude!

    Cut the crap. Facts are
    a) The guys in power do what ever they can, and try to justify it.
    b) Past has had genocides, mass exterminations, racial exodus, etc…Everybody who is anybody has done them.
    c) Maldives is a speck on the map, with NOTHING, other than tourism. Do everything you possibly can to protect it, nurture it and grow it. The only way government/people can survive in this world is a prosperous tourism. And of course government would try to console hapless population with anything, notably “The blue island where fishing is best”, “The green island where a few tomatoes grow” etc, “The environment Island for those not smoking.
    d) All religions are farce. A lie about deity to manage population. With a good constitution and rulers, it NO LONGER requires religion. If a god exists, he will guide any human who lives good, regardless of religious fanatics ideologies.
    e) Islam allows a few men to rule, abuse power and control population. It is best suited for managing lazy, arrogant, ignorant arab-like population. It doesn’t stand a chance in this age. Islam had golden ages in the 10th century, since then the power, resourcefulness, the creativity, initiatives have declined to NOTHING now. Almost everything in this world now, social habits, gadgets, traveling, internet, medicine, so on… has been created thanks to the hardworking men and women in the west and some selected other countries. NONE of anything of significance has come out of mid-east.
    f) Nobody in their right minds would send any of their kids to mid-east. Even those who speaks out front on western injustice. Statistics show most want their kids to be educated in UK, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia etc… mostly non-islamic and certainly not religious studies. They want their kids to study and work hard and make a good living. Nothing else matters.
    g) And as the education level increases, what has happened in other countries will happen to Maldives. Religion has to step a side, and let free thinking, social harmony lead the way.

    @Theo

You are an atheist. I hope I am not wrong.

You are REJECTING double standard. That’s good actually, but you must understand, there is really no double standard in Islam. Islam is THE standard, like your REJECTION of God, because you believe there is NO God. That’s also good because you are actually REJCTING all kinds of representations, symbols and idols of God, BUT, you are not rejecting GOD ALMIGHTY.

So if you try just a little bit with an open mind, you will find the Muslim IN you.

Right now you are in a maze and you don’t know how to get OUT of it. That’s because you are withholding the WILL to get out. To be a Muslim.

Indeed you are not wrong, for I am a naturalist humanist.
I see no valid reasons for believing in fairies, demons, unicorns, angels, gods, telepathy, afterlife, Atlantis, djinns, Yeti, etc.

Interesting that you recur to “double standard” in Islam, something Í didn’t mention yet.
When you say it doesn’t exist in Islam, do you mean that women have the same rights as men?
Does it also mean that Jews and Christians have the same rights as Muslims?
Does it mean atheists and polytheists have the same rights? And how about homosexuals?

You don’t need to reply to these questions, because I can make a list of quotations from Koran and Ahadith which will answer them neatly. And they will not confirm your remarks.

So I thank you for your encouragements, but I’d rather stay free.
