Police commence investigation after 11 year-old child gives birth

Police commence investigation after 11 year-old child gives birth thumbnail

An 11 year-old girl who on Thursday prematurely gave birth to a child is said to be in a stable condition, as police today confirmed investigations were now under way into the case.

The girl, who cannot be identified due to her age, gave birth to the child two months prematurely. The child died early morning on Friday (November 2), after being taken to Feydhoo regional hospital in Seenu Atoll for further treatment, local media has reported.

The Maldives Police Service confirmed investigations into the matter were taking place, but said further details could not be disclosed due to the age of the child and the risk she could be identified and face possible recrimination.

A police spokesperson was unable to confirm the nature of the investigation at present.

However, local newspaper Haveeru, citing what it called reliable sources, reported that the girl had allegedly been a frequent victim of sexual assault before becoming pregnant.

“She came here with her mother complaining of constipation and stomach pain. Doctors had examined her and given an injection. But when she started to complain of severe pain, upon further examination doctors found that she was pregnant. The girl admitted that she got pregnant after someone had sexually molested her,” Haveeru quoted a local health centre official as saying.

The Health Ministry has meanwhile forwarded further requests for information on the case to the Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights, which is mandated to deal with the matter.

Gender Minister Dhiyana Saeed was not responding to calls from Minivan News at the time of press.

Abuse statistics

Almost one in seven children of secondary school age in the Maldives have been sexually abused at some time in their lives, according to an unpublished 2009 study on violence against minors.

Rates of sexual abuse for girls are almost twice as high than for boys at 20 percent – one in five girls have been sexually abused – while the figure for boys was 11 percent. Girls are particularly at risk in the capital Male’, the report found.

In recent years, local authorities and NGOs have released a number of findings trying to detail the extent of child abuse and wider sexual assaults within society.

The state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital’s (IGMH’s) Family Protection Unit reported in 2010 that the centre was notified of 42 cases of rape between 2005-2010. Most of these cases were found to involve minors.

According to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, 13 rape cases were reported last year alone, the majority of which most were gang rapes or assaults involving minors.

No please do not let this concern you. Wait for a cartoon to be published or a movie to be made and then run amok with your outrage.

My country is much more superior to yours,
Ours have the worst statistics for child abuse and rape in the region.

Nearly 45% of all girls have been abused at least once in their life time in India.
Hah maldivians, India is far more superior to you in that aspect too.

And we have caste systems, And people like myself are better than other people
in my country because I am from the higher castes.

You Sunni maldivians are dirty and filthy,
In my country, people like you get burned on buses, because we kill muslims like you in riots!

Is this only happening in Maldives ? Was not there any child abuse, murders, mugging happening so called western world ?

But do not misunderstand that I am not saying that these are good and these things should happened ?

These issue has nothing to do with the religion. These issues were always related with drug issues .

If we are to stop this, we need to stop the drug and drugs related problem., Thats the solution for all these social problem.

  4. Damn on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 4:01 PM

    @mody

Unfortunately some extremist factions of muslims still view women, even young as sexual objects..

And its not an excuse that 1400 years ago people did that, that was a time when an average female life expectancy was close to 25 and much less due to child birth.. And the concept of child did not even exist back then

It is a drug related, social and religious problem, its not Islam thats bad. But its muslims who do horrible things in the name of Islam that is bad

Before everyone goes all sympathaetic for the girl, we do not know if this was rape or zinaa. If it was rape then perpetrator must be punished by ruling of the Sharia…but if it was ziney, sharia has ruling too for both fornicators to be punished. We cannot let her off punishment just for being young …sin is sin, and it doesn’t matter of u r 18, 21, or 11. If you done crime you must be punished.

Just something for ur considerations. Only Allah (swt) knows best.

its an 11 year old girl…
there is no zina for kids, It is RAPE
regardless if she is that young

    You are sick and disgusting

  8. A Believer on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 5:00 PM

    @Indira New Delhi.

    YOU ARE NOT AN INDIAN.

WTF you have told about we Muslims, doesnt matter which country we are based on.! But still we are Muslims, and I AM AN INDIAN. Your words what You have mentioned is rediculous.! YOU SHOULD STOP THIS MIND. OR KILL ALL THE MUSLIMS IN INDIA AS WHAT WAS HAPPEND IN BABARI MASJID.!!!!!

  9. Fradei on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 5:01 PM

It is sad and quite disgusting reading such comments for a tragedy like this one. @Indira New Delhi sad that you laugh about child abuse and rape. @ Mody child abuse happens in all Countries, but please do not always hide your head under the sand and point the finger to other Countries trying to make everything normal. @ Musaa Shuaib a 11 years girl is a child not an adult to speak about fornication. A child got pregnant, her child is dead are you people not thinking at all about it??? Think one second if she was your sister or your own daughter will you then be concerned?

  10. A Believer on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 5:03 PM

I would rather say, this is mainly due to the drug use if this was happend due to thefrequent RAPES. Then the criminal should be caught and be punished. If this was ZINA, still both deserve the punishment according to the Shari’ah.

  11. Wives and Concubines on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 5:05 PM

I agree with many comments on Haveeru. We should be stoning this 11 year old ADULT. Laws should also be changed so that a child is considered an adult the moment they hit puberty. After all, many child marriages happened in the prophet’s time, and even he married a 6 year old Aisha, who would later in her life, claim that a goat ate the stoning verse.

  12. Ekaola's buddy on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 5:10 PM

Idiots exist in The Maldives, Musaa Shuaib is the proof. Extremist ass.

  13. Hassan on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 6:07 PM

Agree with Musaa Shuaib and A Believer, we dont know if this was rape or zina, so it is useless to pretend to know something we dont. If it was zina yes she must be punished by Sharia, whatever the islamophobes on Minivannews have to say about it dont matter.

  14. ibra on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 6:15 PM

How about do a research to find out about the status on Maldivian mental health. I bet 98.5% are psychopaths. I have not met a single Maldivian whose brain functions as a normal civilized human being. One of the fathers of high court judge has abused his grand children and the case never was public.

Lot of these psychopaths even thinks that the child abuse is very normal in their religion. According to them the girls start to experience their sexual desire from the age of 6 and once the child has this desire it is fundamentally ok to have sex with them, this is a sick society. I am not sure why these cases are published, this is simple normal day today activities for this sick society.

  15. Jehuda bin Israel on Sat, 3rd Nov 2012 7:02 PM

In my country (Israel) we consider the age of consent by the word of god. so a child is no more a child around the age of 9 (women). its all biological. This artificial system of classifying minors by a certain numerical number such as 17 or 18 is illogical and unreasonable.

Thats why we sometimes arrest 12 years young Palestinian boys for throwing stones.
We are very rational people, we call a spade a spade. so this rationale of classifying women as young children despite their active sex life is very damaging to the moral fabric of the society.

    Shalom.

When maummon, yameen, anni, thasmeen, qasim, waheed and mndf nazim and adaalath wants wants to travel abroad in first class, they get all the means, the time and the reason.

But these ‘great men’ are clueless in stopping child abuse. All the do is blame the other.

This country has betrayed its young in their silly political game. And when did politics become superior to human dignity ????

    Shame on you all

  17. Patriot on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 12:43 AM

    Truly regret this happening!
It is my sincere hope that this 11 year victim can find justice even at a cost!
But again if it were the works of an “A” grade politician, a judge or a serviceman! I am sorry the case is over, another Dr. Afrasheem case alike!
And what a coincidence to get the Police Investigation turn their attention towards a dummy that just popped up at the correct time!

  18. Barbarian on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 9:43 AM

Crazy muslims, why are so many muslims so crazy and dumb. Must be all the Sheiks giving so many Fathwaas, you no longer have the capacity to think.

Good, now Milk Sheik Ali Rameez should the 11 year old prized jaariya women to his harem and give her a good stoning

@Wives and Concubines – claim that a goat ate the stoning verse.

the crazy Muslim will shouts @

1 – many petition remove this page from

    2 – many will shout K*** him

3 – only a had full will think about it, research and try to find the truth it

Does anyone know that in Maldivian, mothers don’t trust their husbands and never let them approach their child girls when they are 6 years old. The season behind is, Maldivian do not have conscience that control their natural animal instinct. Even Fathers do not interact with their girl babies because this is considered as sexual approach. If any father keeps a better nearness to his girl, he could be suspected of his intention. This all proves that the culture itself is based on child abuse even within the family.

  20. Fathun on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 12:29 PM

Does this mean that when this girl turns 18 she will be flogged?

  21. Aicha on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 1:10 PM

I feel sorry for her – how can anyone talk about punishing her?? An 11-year old?!

She’s a victim in every sense:

    1) either she was a neglected child, took drugs and got together with the wrong people who convinced her to have sex

    2) or she was the victim of rape without drugs involved, and shy to tell

    3) she had a boyfriend and experimented without having had sex education, now covering it up with being “sexually molested”.

The problem in our country is that the Mullahs are sexualizing our children by putting a veil on them. It indicates “this child may tempt men – let’s cover her up”. All bullshit. Then they’re encouraging to get more and more children with less time to care for them, so many get lost on the streets. Oh and sex education is taboo – so what should they do? How would they know how fast it happens?

If this girl had a good relationship to her mother/guardian, she could have told her what happened and there would have been means to make sure a pregnancy will not take place. Now this poor girl had to go through a 7 months pregnancy with her baby finally dead.

It’s an illusion that young people don’t meet, experience and finally have sex. Wake up in reality, cave dwellers!

  22. Ashiyath on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 1:15 PM

The girl ‘admitted’ ? Shouldn’t it be ‘explained’ ?

  23. Wargath bin Naufal on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 1:18 PM

wallahi Maldives is f***ed and screwed just look at the commentary response to.

  24. Rationale on Sun, 4th Nov 2012 5:25 PM

I preferred not to read the article or the comments. But instead try to scribble a fair comment.
Having heard the voice from different corners of Maldives in the recent past, obviously Mr. Riyaz would suspect this as an act by MDP which need to be referred to Vilingili court. If any suspect is to be photographed make sure he wears a yellow T shirt. And this pregnancy is ground enough for MDP’s suspension from the upcoming election.
Tell the Indian bloke that Mr. Mahathuma Gandhi & Mulley can take 11 years into their beds, but pls leave us (Muslims) alone as we dont need to colour mark our foreheads. Because of you foriegners we already lost our Dhunya to Bangalhees. We demand all Bangaalhees depart our country and leave behind our grand child. Do not let Abulho Gaz within sight of this little one. cos he may ask the girl to demonstrate whats happend, to him. CoNI report on this matter states theres no proof that the girl was impregnated by another human.
My advice to everyone is “Ballavaigen kuriah gendhavaa” ….
was the baby yellow, pink, red, or blue. of course it will be anyway half green
